  1. wheatearlp

Unknown bird drainage ditch Derby uk.

Could be, depending on bill colour and 'sharpness' of plumage. However, such a well-grown juvenile is extremely unlikely at this time of year given that they are only likely to have hatched recently and would look more like those in the attached image.

A brief visit to the Moors Pool at #uptonwarren this morning produced nothing new for the year. However, there were 2 darvic-ringed BHGs present - 24H0 (black characters on white ring), present for its 6th successive year, having been ringed 10/6/13 at Cerney Wick in the Cotswold Water Park. 8. wheatearlp

    Upton Warren

Not that it compares with Sandwich Tern or Mandarin, but another new darvic-ringed BHG was present on the Flashes today. It is a Belvide-ringed bird - 29F8 - red ring, white writing. I'm awaiting feedback from the scheme co-ordinator but in the meantime, have a picture.

  10. wheatearlp

    Upton Warren

24H0 was ringed in the nest on 10/6/13 at Cerney Wick in Cotswold Water Park. It has appeared at Upton in 8 of 10 years from 2015; the years it was not seen being 2016 and 2021 (covid restricted viewing). It bred successfully at Upton in 2019 and probably did so last year. In all 24H0 had been...

RSPB going to phase scannable membership cards from September 2023

OK, you've posted two screen-shots from an older thread to this one, which itself has been inactive for four months. I have to ask why? Is there further info. to come on this?
  15. wheatearlp

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

I agree, heard only is a contentious thing for some(many?). Personally, there is nothing on my life list that is heard only, more 'cos I rarely bird outside GB than because I've been extremely fortunate. I don't count heard only on my British year-list, although do add them to BirdTrack to...

    Northampton Uk Redpoll

Difficult to tell whether the overall apparent paleness is real or an artefact in this boc shot. Wing-bar doesn't appear very white but undertail coverts seem to have limited streaking. On balance I'd say Lesser, but an original pic would be easier to assess.

    Upton Warren

Latest info attached re Belgian-ringed BHG EH12 that was noted at the Moors Pool yesterday & on Friday.

Another one for BHG. Is there a less-cropped version of this photo?
  20. wheatearlp

    Upton Warren

There have been one or two such birds noted over the last 5-6 years (and probably before that?). The underpart colouring has varied from peach to pale pink, with some more obvious ones as shown in your photos.

at last the shell guide british birds

I remember having the discussion in the early 1970s with a birding friend, both of us aged c.12, on the differing merits of Hamlyn vs. HFP. I went with the latter, he with the former. I remain happy with my choice & still have the book in a box somewhere in the house.

Are these a linnet and siskin?

Yes, they can. Google Lesser Redpoll for images of the possibilities. Siskins would be yellow on the breast, rather than red, & dark-streaked on a white/pale base colour on the lower breast & belly.
