Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

Eek. Got woefully behind on updating the spreadsheets and here. My local bird club runs a green challenge in April, and I ended the month on 60 species. Given that my annual total at that point was 62, you can tell just how quiet Jan-Mar are here! Highlights were the Vesper Sparrow I've already...

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

First kayak of the year today, which meant I caught up with a few ducks, some of which you have caught up with already! As far as I can work out Bufflehead is the only new one for the group effort (Common Goldeneye and Common Merganser/Goosander having been seen elsewhere). An American Herring...

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

April is bringing lots of new arrivals here, With an extra 29 species seen so far, which I won't list all of here, I've added them to the spreadsheet. I think the only one that had already been added to the world list was Ring-billed Gull. I hadn't realized they were so widespread. A Vesper...

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

Aha. I tried European, Eurasian, just plain starling, figured it had to be there somewhere. Thanks.

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

Arrival of the blackbirds today - Common Grackle and Red-winged Blackbird both here and making sure everyone knows it. Also a couple of American Robins in the mix. Also added some other over-winterers that I haven't caught up with yet, each comes with a query for the group list: Wild Turkey -...

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

I must admit that I was surprised it hadn't already been spotted, checked and double checked the list. I've only seen Ring Ousel once, a very nice memory. Lovely bird.

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

Local Merlin arrived today, exact same date as last year.

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

Still no spring migrants here yet, though they my birding friends slightly further south have had some so I'm getting hopeful. Very nice encounter with a male pileated this morning though. Always a joy. I still remember seeing my first when we moved here in 2009 - quite a shock after UK woodpeckers.

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

Hmm, I added another this week (Finally caught up with a Brown Creeper, one that has been around all year for sure), have just added it to the World list too, but wasn't sure whether to insert it above the red ones? Thanks for adding the last lot! Still very quiet here, though the next couple...

Green Listing 2023 - Joint Thread

I'd love to join in if it isn't too late. I've been green listing for the last 10 years or so, mainly on foot (walking/snowshoeing), occasionally kayaking (we live by a large lake), very very occasionally cycling. Not going for big totals, but enjoying seeing what changes from year to year...

    John's Mammals 2023

Also. Wow. The photos/sightings in this thread are a joy as ever. Particularly those bat shots!

    John's Mammals 2023

Sticking my head up after a few years, I used to hang out here (or in previous incarnations at least) a fair amount. I've been trying to capture record shots of the local mammals here this year. After regular sightings of Fisher tracks in the woods around our house (SW Quebec), I finally got...

    Garden/Yard List 2020

Thank you Carol. You've summed up pretty much perfectly what I love about the thread too. I've not seen the Barred in a while, but I've heard a pair duetting in the night. A local friend thinks there is a pair setting up in a tree hole near her place. I'm not quite sure how big their territory...

    Garden/Yard List 2020

27 Golden Crowned Kinglet Which I know for sure I've had earlier, but must have forgotten to write it down. 28 Fox Sparrows doing their foot shuffle under the feeders for the past couple of days. I love it when they pass through, one of my favourites. Also had a couple of Turkey Vultures...

    Garden/Yard List 2020

Welcome to all the newcomers, great reading on everyone's feathered visitors. We've finally got the start of spring migration turning up now (bang on time, just feels longer than usual!), so adding birds pretty much daily at the moment. 18 American Robin 19 Turkey Vulture 20 Sharp-shinned...

    Garden/Yard List 2020

18 American Robin Woken at 630 by the first dawn chorus of spring. It was scrappy, and not a diverse chorus (all American Robins, unless the passing croaking Raven counts!), but it was lovely. Popped outside to listen, and saw one hopping about in the leaf litter patches that have appeared in...

    Garden/Yard List 2020

17 Dark-eyed Junco Turned up under the feeders yesterday. They've been around locally most of winter I think, but clearly had better offers than my selection!

    Garden/Yard List 2020

Sending love. The Jasper of my name was our dog. We're heartbroken because we love them. Take care of yourself.

    Garden/Yard List 2020

Couple of extras here over the last fortnight. I saw my first red-winged blackbird of the year locally yesterday, so I suspect things are about to get more interesting (don't tell my winter stalwarts I said that, they've kept me going the last few months!) 14 Red Crossbill 15 Bald Eagle 16...

I was going to celebrate, and then realised it was you that had been waiting (im)patiently for siskins, not H. Keep hope alive!

    Garden/Yard List 2020

Several hours spent staring out the window logging observations for the GBBC this weekend, just one to add to the year list though, and one that I hadn't realized I'd missed so far. 13 Pileated Woodpecker

    Garden/Yard List 2020

12 Pine Siskin First one I've seen in the garden since May 2018. Though it was here so briefly who knows how many have nipped in and out without me noticing!

    Garden/Yard List 2020

I saw my lifer white-winged crossbills yesterday, though not in the garden!

    Garden/Yard List 2020

You got me thinking about Garden lifers. I only started listing properly soon after we moved to this place, so I'll edit out those that I likely saw before but didn't have written down. That leaves me with: Eastern Whippoorwill - heard only. The only heard only bird I've got on my list. Would...

    Garden/Yard List 2020

Ha! I'm getting greyer, but not counting myself as senior quite yet! Our local Barreds can be very accommodating, though they always give off an aloof air. We have hammocks set up outside, and one has flown in to one of the trees we're hanging from, and stayed put for over an hour. Not such a...
