    IS Lenses

I just activated the IS motor on my lens and pulled the camera off it while it was still operating. Just as I expected, the IS stopped because the lens lost the power being supplied by the camera, but there were absolutely no ill effects. The lens and camera work as normal.

    Suitable bag for 300 f/2.8 on 1dm3

I just bought the Lowepro Vertex 300 AW, which will fit a 1D-series camera + 300 2.8L IS + hood + 2x extender all assembled together. The 200 AW will fit the same thing without the 2x extender :)

    Exposure compensation dial

I know that on the 1Ds II, you have to half-press the shutter first in order to dial in exposure compensation. Have you tried that?

    EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM

What a lens! I ran around Comprehensive Park last night and this morning practicing birding with this lens and the 2x II extender. 600mm is tough to handle, but still not enough reach for small birds. This combination is very sharp wide open at f/5.6, though. The 70-200mm f/2.8L IS plus 2x...

    It arrives!

My 300mm f/2.8L IS USM finally came after a 7 week wait! Here's my wife, posing with it for me: I've been really bogged down with work and the crappy weather lately, so I haven't got out to shoot much, but the arrival of my new toy is a good reason to get off my butt rain or shine this...

7D versus Mark IV: Pixels per bird

You're right, Roy. Higher pixel density increases resolution for the most part, but also brings about many unwanted side effects, like higher noise. The article that Nigel posted is very informative!

7D versus Mark IV: Pixels per bird

Tim Taylor, I think you can ignore the sensor size if you are using the pixel density value that I introduced earlier. Using the same lens at the same distance on both cameras means that the image of the bird projected onto the sensor will also be the same size. If the projected image of the...

7D versus Mark IV: Pixels per bird

You don't really have to think about what the megapixel count would be "if this camera had a full frame sensor." Just divide sensor area by megapixels to get what DPReview calls "pixel density." Higher pixel density = more pixels per duck, no matter what lens you use. Pixel densities for...

Which Bird do you Least Like?

I've seen very many pictures of cormorants lately, and I'm convinced that they're the ugliest birds out there. My main interest is beautiful bids, so I have to say that the cormorants are my most hated birds |:D|

    Photographing Birds

Best aperture really depends on various things. If you have certain lenses, like my 70-200 f/2.8L IS and 2x Extender, you will need to stop down to f/11 just to get *any* sharpness out of it. If you have a very long prime lens, like a 400 f/5.6 lens, you can use it wide open with no problem at...

    Hello from Okinawa!

Nice to meet you all. I'm a beginner bird photographer currently in Okinawa, Japan. Check out my first blog post and the few pictures in my gallery (I'll upload more as I deal with the 3-per-day limit |:D|). I have already made contact with Daninjapan, who lives in Okinawa as well, and he...
