    E Norfolk - 3 to ID please

Thanks for quick replies. I'm kicking myself over the golden plover - short beak - big eyes. I'll know it next time! I was hoping the third was a redstart - another first for me. Thanks again. Liz.

    E Norfolk - 3 to ID please

These pics were taken a few days ago at Winterton. I'm struggling to ID from books, but I think the first is ruff and the second wheatear. The third was taken from a long way off - hand holding my brand new camera (somewhat shakily). The bird first caught my eye when it was flying between the...

    Today at the feeder

1 big brown rat underneath sunflower (hearts) feeder! Any suggestions on how to stop it returning? I don't want to stop feeding the birds. Cburrier1...welcome to forum.....you should introduce yourself in the "say hello" section. I see you've got white-crowned sparrows at your feeder. Did you...

    Red Breasted Goose

I spotted this Red Breasted Goose on the River Yare, near Norwich, last Sunday. It was with a group of Greylags. I believe it's not very common in England but is it rare enough to have notified anyone - and if so, who?

    Another Plover(?) ID

As I suspected, I was completely wrong. I was looking in wrong part of guide. It's easy for you experienced guys but at least we novices have plenty of "firsts"! Thanks for responses. Liz.

    Another Plover(?) ID

Please ID these birds for me. 6 of them were flying around in unison over the river Yare near Brundall in Norfolk - last Friday evening. They settled on the opposite bank but as it was getting dark this is the best picture that I could manage. I've looked in my Collins and I think they are a...

    What did I see?

Hey - I didn't mean to start a row, but thanks for all the interest. The dark blue of the juv. bullfinch matches better than the indigo bunting - except that I didn't notice blue in the tail and the brown was a lot darker. It was in the shade - so I suppose it would have appeared darker than in...

    What did I see?

It would be lovely to think my bird was one, but I had discounted Indigo Bunting because Collins states that it's rare in UK. Do you really think mine could be one? I agree that the blue panel was certainly very striking. Liz

    What did I see?

jforgham... It was still sat on the road as I was almost level. I couldn't watch it any more as I had to watch the road ahead. Clouseau... That's the nearest likeness I've seen so far, but I don't remember the tail being that long. Also, the blue was in the area I've circled. What is this...

    What did I see?

Definitely not a hawfinch. It's main colouring was dark brown - which made me think it was a sparrow. I'm not sure if it was the primaries or secondaries that were dark blue in colour. I just remember saying to myself "that was pretty" & made a mental note to look it up when I got home. I...

    What did I see?

Yesterday while out driving down an Essex country lane I spotted what I thought was a sparrow in the road. I kept an eye on it, so that I didn't run it over, and then spotted that it had a dark blue patch on its wings. I've looked in my Collins and on the web, but I can't find anything that...

    Help please!

I've just noticed a poorly young starling in my garden. It seems to have part of its innards hanging out. There appears to be no other sign of injury. Several youngsters have been feeding and bathing happily this morning but this poor thing has been sitting quietly by itself. The parents are...

    Birds eyelids

I took some pics of my garden birds today and for the first time I noticed that birds have eyelids. The woodpigeon dozed off while perched on a feeder and stayed in that position for about 20 minutes. I've seen birds snoozing in the past but I've never seen them with their eyes shut.

    Mystery of disappearing seed feeder

A friend recently gave me a red mesh seed feeder (full of seeds) to hang in my garden. Last night I got a few steps into the garden with it, just as my phone started to ring. I lay the feeder down on a dwarf wall and came back inside to answer the phone, then forgot about it until this...

    Dunnock

Keep watching and you'll probably see another. Like you, I've only been birding for a short while and I'm amazed at what I've been missing all these years. I must have been walking around with my eyes shut! I've found that the dunnocks in my garden tend to appear at the same time as the...

    Thrush ID please

Thanks for those pointers. This bird is a new visitor to my garden. I spotted it on the fence - didn't see it in flight apart from when it was chased away by my regular visiting blackbird. It was slightly smaller than the (male) blackbird. I have yet to see a fieldfare or redwing so can't...
