    Nikon Mirrorless cameras

Agreed, I am very disappointed that Nikon did not address more of the problems (like mandatory 2-second review, crippled FT-1, etc.), and no fast prime lenses. I don't hold out much hope that the v2 if and when it appears will be any better. Maybe the v3? :C

Nikon 300/4 ED-IF AF too slow?

I have used the 300/4 AF on a D90. It can track slow and predictable BIF such as vultures, geese and herons quite well, but I found it very difficult to track smaller and quicker birds. The focus limiter helps, but it is no speed demon. I have no experience with the AF-S version.

    Nikon D90 + Vixen ED81S ?

I did manage to take apart one that looked somewhat similar a few years ago by the application of brute force. IIRC, I supported the metal housing and used a padded wooden dowel and a hammer from the leg side to tap the lens free. However, I am sure this approach could just as easily have...

    Nikon Mirrorless cameras

    I've been using a Summicron 50 f/2 on my V1. I think you'll be happy.

    Telescoping Problems

It's not really difficult to glue the chip on - I've done several - but it does have to be placed precisely. In some cases the mount has to be filed down or built up a little. Some of the sellers provide a simple jig that helps get the position right. Just use a slow drying glue like...

    Telescoping Problems

This is correct. Adding a Dandelion chip to the adapter will enable all metering modes. You just have to program the chip to say it's an 600mm f/7.5 lens and the camera will be quite happy.

    How to improve results?

If trap focus will work on the Olympus with an autofocus lens, it should work with a dandelion chip - the camera doesn't know it's manual focus, so I think it just waits until it gets the focus confirmation signal, and then fires. At least, it works that way with a D90.

    Nikon V1 FT1 problem

The camera thinks there is no lens attached, so it may be a problem with the adapter. Have you tried other Nikon FX or DX lenses with your FT1?

    Nikon AIS manual focusing lens

If you are moderately handy, you can also buy the Dandelion chips separately for about $35 and modify the lenses yourself. I've done this for a few lenses, it's not hard but you have to be accurate in placing the chip. See http://ongabonga.wordpress.com/tag/dandelion-chip/

66mm ED APO - Just way too small?

@alphan - yes, it is a pain. Most of the issues could be fixed in firmware - for instance there's a "F" button that might be used to give direct access to ISO - but somehow I doubt Nikon will do any major firmware changes. I'm sure they'd rather we all bought the V2 when it comes out.

    Nikon V1

I have done this and it works rather well. Here's an example. I have some comments on the camera in the setups thread.

66mm ED APO - Just way too small?

I've tried both - V1 and D90. The V1 has some advantages: - 1.8x longer reach compared with APS-C sensor - Easier manual focus (for me, at least) - Much less camera shake (especially, I think, with the electronic shutter option) And some disadvantages: - Fewer pixels (but only slightly...

66mm ED APO - Just way too small?

I've been wondering about a using 400mm scope with a Nikon V1 for a lightweight portable combination. That would be equivalent to a 720mm on a crop sensor (APS-C) camera. But from what I see, the good 60mm or 66mm APOs are almost as expensive as the 80mms. Or have I just not been looking in...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

I've recently posted a couple of shots in the "Gallery" thread using an 80ED with a Nikon V1 (yes, I moved on from the Pen E-P2), and have been asked for a comparison between the V1 and a crop DSLR. Not wanting to clutter up that thread which is really supposed to be for photos, as Cango gently...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Here is another from the Nikon V1/80ED combination, this time a Titmouse. Uncropped from the same distance of about 40 feet, but with a Tamron PRO 1.4x TC attached. 1/250, ISO 800, this was processed from RAW with some color and brightness/contrast adjustments, and minor sharpening.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

@roztoczol - The pixel density on the V1 is equivalent to about 74MP on a full frame, shows how good these optics are. @Paul - Thanks, I intend to shoot more! These were shot at about 40 feet.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

I've just recently acquired a Nikon V1. The crop factor of 2.7 seems to offer interesting possibilities, and the ability to have autofocus with Nikon lenses is a plus. I tried the scope on it today, just in the garden. The 80ED's 600mm becomes equivalent to 1620mm in full frame terms. Here...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Welcome to the forum. It is indeed amazing how good the images are from these scopes - certainly comparable with top of the line telephotos that are 10x the price. Try some shots, I think you will find it addicting!

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

It's early days yet and I am not really familiar with the camera. My DSLR is a D90, so my comments are relative to that. In the Pen's favor, I find manual focus much easier than with the D90. The P2 has a 7x or 10x image magnification for manual focus which is really good and easy to use to...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

I just acquired a Pen E-P2, and the initial results are quite promising. I've posted a couple of images on the "Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!" thread. The 2x crop factor is intriguing.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

I've just acquired an Olympus Pen E-P2, so naturally I had to put on the scope (Orion ED80), and managed to capture this very colorful female cardinal. I'm quite pleased with this little camera - the IQ is better than I expected. Both shots are uncropped from raw files with only minor white...

    Focal reducer

kurakura, it reduces the focal length and that lowers the effective f ratio. It works the exact opposite way to a teleconverter or barlow.

    Nikon Mirrorless cameras

Good question. If there were a big commercial move to pro-level mirrorless cameras, I think Nikon would have to embrace it eventually. Probably later rather than sooner.
