    Alec (Alexander) Forbes-Watson (1935–2013)

As quite a few visitors to this forum are interested in eponyms, I see, it may interest some of those people to learn that Alec Forbes-Watson died in Kenya yesterday, following a long illness (per Bob Dowsett). He is celebrated in the English name of the swift Apus berliozi while Dillon Ripley...

    Dorst's Cisticola

Anyone know why IOC continues to recognise the above species under the name Cisticola dorsti, when it was demonstrated already seven years ago (to the satisfaction even of one of its describers) that the name dorsti is a synonym of C. ruficeps guinea? (see attachment). Or is it just an...

    Dutch Harbor & Tolsona Campground

In an effort to get out to the Baby Islands for Whiskered Auklets in early June, I've tried contacting a bunch of boat people in Dutch Harbor, to date without any success. They're either busy at the end of the first week of June or don't answer (or perhaps receive) my e-mails. Does anyone here...

    Polar Bear at Barrow

I’m currently planning a trip to Alaska in June 2011, and am trying to make a choice as to where to go to see Spectacled Eider; Barrow or Deadhorse. What has this to do with mammals? My choice could be influenced based on current information as to the relative likelihood of seeing Polar Bear at...

As Bull. BOC always contains much of interest to many who post within this forum, it seems appropriate for me to initiate a series of posts to update folks with the contents of each issue.
