    Northern Ireland Dialect Bird Names

North Antrim bird names. A lot of these names are posted previously but I thought these may be of interest. The names come from a handwritten set of notes by W.H. Given of Coleraine. They were made in 1910-12 by Mr Given who bird-watched around Coleraine and North Antrim. I'm not quite sure...

Megabirds and Mammals and of the Bornean Rainforest: 4-11 May 2014

I'm glad you saw orangutans, they are not necessarily easy to see at all. My first encounter was not quite as serene as yours, as it tried to take a dump on me. I appreciated its candour. Was this encounter also in the Rainforest Discovery Centre? I was very impressed with it and...

Megabirds and Mammals and of the Bornean Rainforest: 4-11 May 2014

Fantastic, Mike. Mt Kinabalu is probably my favourite place to visit- the tropics but not hot! Everett's Thrush is a proper mega, even if it is a bit grey-backed thrushish... I've never been to the hot springs- worth a visit?

Latest excitement in the valley has been a pair of Swinhoe's Minivets (Brown-rumped Minivets) which have been seen for the past three mornings in a dead tree on my regular dog walking route. Dylan

    The Magic Roundabout

Full credit to your optimism, Mike. Who knew a roundabout could be quite so magic? Dylan

    The Magic Roundabout

The Lam Tsuen Asian Paradise Flycatcher is also hanging around in a fruiting fig tree- must bring in a lot of insects. I'll have to back and see if anything else turns up!

    The Magic Roundabout

Sooty-headed bulbul is a bit of a surprise bird, it's not one I would associate with that habitat (they definitely seem to prefer scrubby grassland) or close to the sea. Have you seen Chestnut Bulbul there yet? I will be passing your patch in a few days on my way home, I'll keep an eye out for...

I am sorry, Mike! The sighting the other morning was a very hopeful possible maybe, it was fleeting and only an impression. It could well have been an immature black-crowned night-heron. I really only got a fleeting glance and I have flushed adult BC night herons off the path several times so...

    Exploring Lantau

Brilliant bird, Mike. Hope you were not tempted to stray into the private parts. 8-P

    Exploring Lantau

Looks like a great place to visit regularly, Mike. I am sure you will turn up some great birds this year. Great shot of the Japanese Thrush! Dylan

You should get Chinese francolin up in the hills easy enough, I saw grass bird up there too. Blue Whistling Thrush seemed to be common and I saw several greater green snakes when I lived there. Glad you can hear the toads! Lam Tsuen is still here for you when you need it!:t: Dylan

Attached is a rough recording of the call- the five/six note high pitch call. Sorry about all the background, dawn is noisy! I still don't know what it is. Dylan https://www.dropbox.com/s/4md0l9cv58tviyr/PTK%20warber%20full-1.mp3

A waxwing, one of these days, Mike, one of these days. Hopefully, before mid-December! Still don't know what the other two flycatchers were, not enough light and no binoculars! I went out early again this morning but no luck. Dylan

Glad you got the Hodgson's- not a figment of my imagination! It was calling again this evening. I note the Ferruginous Fly pic has been posted twice. I think once is more than enough until I see one. (i do like the shrike pic though).

I think I have a good idea what your wydahs are... I am yet to see a mongoose- that is a very productive veggie patch. Have your identified you resident raptor yet?

That is a very extensive list. The only other I can only add is flowerpot snake (Brahminy Blind Snake, Ramphotyphlops braminus)- seen in a flowerpot in the yard and another on a path in Pak Tin Kong.

That's a great website, thanks, Mike. I hadn't seen it before. As for my multi-coloured buckets, I need a bigger one after that cobra. It never took its eyes off me the whole time.

Hi Mike, I'm back in the valley after a month away and took a walk this morning- resulting in precisely nothing of excitement! Summer is too quiet and I'm looking forward to the first migrants. Azure-winged Magpie would be a nice addition to my Lam Tsuen list. Mustn't grumble though...

    USA Grand Tour

What a trip, Mike! Keep the reports coming. I am getting rather jealous but looking forward i seeing what the Pacific coast has to offer. Dylan

Hi Mike, great blog! No sign of the python again but I'll keep looking. The tree with the bright red seed pods is a Sterculia species, I think. Dylan
