Tern ID, Santa Barbara, CA, USA

Hello Birders, On July 23 I took a pelagic trip out of Santa Barbara, CA, US and photographed a 1st year (?) tern, along with a number of other birders, and was uncertain as to its ID: Common Tern or Arctic? Both in the field and reviewing photographs, I felt there were valid arguments for...

Thank you Ken - I don't mind digital work, but I *love* paper and the kinds of marks that are made on it. No point in copying a photo for me. And hello Jo! It's very nice to meet you here. I just had a long troll through your thread - fantastic sketches!

Ooh I love plates. I love your plates! And the sketches - plates and sketches are my favorite art. ;) Fantastic. Will you/your work be at Birdfair? I think I'm going this year... I think.

Thanks for looking, and I'm grateful to be a part of this forum! It's all new to me, so I am trying to figure out how to make it "mine" somehow. I did a digital drawing once before, and when it became apparent that yes, you can draw freehand in photoshop and make your drawing look um, like a...

Oops just tested it - if you are logged in to Facebook, you can see it, but if not, you can't. I'll see if he can change the privacy settings, and then it should be open for viewing (this album is nicer to look at than the article - more drawings).

Thank you! I am now working on sketches for a logo - for the CT Young Birders Club (go youth birding), and am posting the development on my blog. Here are the first two sittings, and I'll update as I work on these this week. Digital drawing, btw, using a tablet and stylus. It's really fun...

On The Hoof - Fieldwork From Orkney

So very beautiful, and it is such a treat to be able to see what you are seeing. I am having Orkney envy! The sketches are so immediate, and I feel like I am there.

Cheers all! I posted the final drawing on my blog, but can't post an image here because my laptop is in sick bay for a few days. Here is a link to the post, if you are interested: http://mydogoscar.com/birdspot/2011/05/09/phthalocyanine/ Let's see if this works from a mobile device... Best...

Hi Ken - yup, they are in chronological order. There's also a size difference - the first two are c. 5 or 6", the last is 14+"... I'm hoping to keep the looseness in the last one while finishing it up - no mean feat for me! General question - I'm working on some of the weirdness in the last one...

Hello, to anyone who might remember me! I have been in Belize, and then Costa Rica; hence no posting. Thought I would put a couple of new things here. While looking for ostensibly more exciting birds in those two countries, I found myself reluctantly charmed by the parrots that hung around our...

Hello - Thank you all for the warm return welcomes. I am going through as many of the fabulous threads as I can - wish I had more time right now. If another flight to the East Coast gets delayed or canceled due to storms, I will get even deeper into the postings today! I am putting up my...
