    Black kite ssp Rwanda

Recently (march 5) saw this group of black kites in Rwanda (Gashora). Milvus migrans parasiticus is the common species down there, while M. m. migrans is an uncommon winter visitor. To my eye, the bird on the right is juvenile parasiticus while on the left is alt migrans. Any divergent opinions?

    B. buteo? W. Rwanda, early March '17

Greetings, this raptor was seen in Gisenyi, Rwanda (~1700 masl) March 2. My first thought was common buzzard, but the tail banding seems rather distinct and thicker than B. buteo, and the breast markings dont seem quite right. Other option would be Mountain Buzzard but it doesnt seem marked...

    Eagles, Pune India, Jan 8

Seen yesterday in scrub/forest adjacent to agricultural land. Three birds total, but photos may be of only two different individuals. Candidates seem to be Indian or greater spotted eagles and tawny or steppe. Thanks in advance!

    Sylvia species, Pune India

Greetings all, Spotted today in scrub/disturbed forest next to a river, what I originally thought to be a Lesser Whitethroat (common here) but later looked at the photo and started thinking Orphean Warbler (uncommon). Certainly in this light, the iris looks very pale, which Grimmskipp (as it...

    What makes a bird "rare"?

Hello all, I'm living and Birding in India, and an avid eBirder. I often look at the handy target lists they can generate, and it's made me really curious how eBird, local reviewers, and rarity committees make the cutoff on the arbitrary distinction of a a bird is considered "rare." In places...

    Gull billed tern? India

seen today in pune, West Central India. Bill looks right for argoondah, but would appreciate help separating from whiskered. Thanks!

    Weird Minivet in Bhutan

Seen today in SE Bhutan, ~210 masl. Was mixed with some Short-billed and Scarlet Minivets. When I saw it I immediately took a photo, thinking it was a lifer Rosy Minivet, but now I'm not so sure. It had a light sort of pastel pink/orange color in the spots on its back and tail, but had yellow...

    Eagle in SE Bhutan

Hello all, this eagle was soaring and kettling up over thick forest in SE Bhutan (~700 masl). At first glance it looks like a Steppe Eagle, but appears to ahve a very short gape. Also looks like a Tawny Eagle to my untrained eye, but those don't occur this far East (acc. to the books). So I was...

    Thattekhad closed?

This from the hornbill camp website: Is this still the case? I was hoping to stay there in April to try and see some of the Western Ghat endemics, do I need to change my plans?

    Kaziranga elephants: Ethical?

Does anyone know about the treatment of the elephants at Kaziranga? I'm planning on visiting Mid-March (PM me if you'll be there and want to go birding!) and while I've heard that elephant-back is really the way to do it, I've also heard that in most cases, domesticated elephants should not be...

    March-May suggestions, birding meetups wanted!

Hello all, I've been living in Bhutan and birding there for most of the last 18 months, and this Spring will finally have a chance to see some of the rest of the subcontinent. I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions on places to go/avoid from March 15 to May 15. I know that's not the...

    Female Flycatcher, Bhutan

Seen 1/31 in SE Bhutan, ~750m. The bird had a white throat, and pretty noticeable rufous rump/upper tail. With the short wings it looks like I would expect a Little Pied to look, but this one was rather terrestrial and I've only seen Little Pied in the trees. It was in the vicinity of a...

Bonelli's or Mt. Hawk Eagle? Bhutan

Hello all, I'd love your input on this being a Bonelli's or Mt. Hawk Eagle, seen at around 700 m, SE Bhutan, 1/31/15. Tail banding seems little tight for Mt. Hawk Eagle (which is definitely more common around here), and when I first looked at this bird (when it was lower and I wasn't ready with...

    Out of place rosefinch? Bhutan

Taken today at ~750 m in SE Bhutan, subtropical broadleaved forest. I bird the area regularly and haven't seen rosefinches finches but once, and never this variety. To my untrained eye, it looks most like a Streaked Rosefinch or a Red-fronted Rosefinch. Unfortunately neither of those occur at...

    Rufous-somethinged Babbler (Bhutan)

It always amazes me when I get a point-blank shot of a certain bird and still have no idea what it is, but this is one confusing bird. Seen yesterday, ~850 m, Southeastern Bhutan. At first I thought Rufous-capped, but checked to be sure, and I started to realize that the Rufous-fronted was so...

    Where do country records live?

Greetings, a rather elementary question for you all. Often when hearing someone describing seeing a rare bird they will say something like "only the third record for this at blah blah blah." So my question is, where are these records of sightings? I'm sure it depends on country, of course. I'm...

    Chiang Mai in June

Just to narrow down what I wrote in the other thread, I think I've narrowed down my plans to doing a four day/three night trip to chaing mai from bangkok. Thaibirding.com (wow what an amazing site!) obviously has tons of great info, just wondering if anyone has a personal preference for best...

    Owlet, Bhutan

Ran into this little guy yesterday afternoon. At about 1:30 pm local time, in southeast Bhutan, elevation ~800 m. The time of day and prominent perch match what i have heard for Asian Barred Owlet, and when he turned his head I didn't see the prominent false eyes of the collared owlet, so I'm...

    Parrotbill confusion (Bhutan)

Greetings. I'm sure this is a rudimentary question, but I'm too confused by now to figure it out. I was out birding today and saw a small parrotbill, orange head, brown back, white breast. Looking at the Inskipps' Birds of Bhutan, they listed the two possibilities as Lesser and Greater...

    Bhutan Raptors

Both seen today in Southeastern Bhutan, ~300 m, possibly the same bird? The first three are of a bird that at the time I thought could've been a mountain hawk eagle. And on the fourth one, I'm leaning toward Crested Goshawk on the assumption that the white patch on the rump is the "diaper" that...

    Bhutan's Feminine Mysteries: thrush/redstart/sunbird

All seen yesterday and today in Dewathang/Samdrup Jongkhar. 1. Female Blue Rock Thrush? 2. Female Hodgson's Redstart? 3. Female Purple Sunbird? Any help with these annoyingly drab females is much appreciated!

    Which female sunbird? Bhutan

Seen today in Samdrup Jongkhar district. From what I've seen the only female sunbirds with yellow underparts is the Purple. But the head doesn't seem to match, specifically the color. Additionally, Purple is not common in this area. Beak seems to small for Little spiderhunter, among other...

    Chats, stone and bush, Bhutan

Seen today in the low elevation Southeast of Bhutan as I took my class of 20 teenage monks birding for the first time! I know that the most likely scenario for the first bird is grey bush chat, and the second as common stonechat, but neither looked quite right, so i thought I would post these...

    Tricky Bhutanese Warbler and Prinia

Both seen nov 8 near Dewathang, Southeast Bhutan, ~750 m elev, in subtropical broadleaved forest. The first appears to me to be Blyth's leaf Warbler, the second seems like maybe Rufescent Prinia? Not feeling too confident on either, as both have other species that look very similar, and there...

    Bhutan

I thought I would post here in the hopes that perhaps Bhutan could get its own subforum. It seems like a country with enough interest to garner its own forum, and, as I'm currently living here, its really most of what I would have to post about, which I would think may be useful to others that...
