Sony RX10 1V the new boy.

BIF with the Sony RX10 m4 I haven't had the camera for very long, but it seems quite capable of taking birds in flight at a reasonable shutter speed under overcast skies. Of course, there are many degrees of overcast sky. In some really dark situations, then a high ISO would be needed to get...

    Panasonic FZ1000 for birding?

I use the FZ1000 for birding and although 400mm is a little short, I bump that up using the extra optical zoom, which if you drop the picture size to 5mp, will give you 800mm and still keep good image quality.

    New FZ2000

I too am awaiting the reviews of the production models, but I suspect that there aren't enough improvements to make me want to shell out $1500 Australian for a camera that doesn't have any improvement in the stills department over the FZ1000. The small increase in zoom, while welcome, isn't enough.

Hello from Carara Nature Reserve in Costa Rica

Welcome Ray. I spend a lot of time with bird photographers and all use binoculars in the range of 8 to 10X and generally small front lens, usually 25-30mm. Weight is the main reason, also at magnifications greater than 10, the binoculars start to become hard to hold steady enough for...

    Upgrading fz200 to fz1000

I have both the FZ200 and the FZ1000. I've had both cameras since they were available, that means I had the FZ1000 for nearly 18 months. It has a number of improvements over the FZ200. The most obvious one is the viewfinder, when you look through it for the first time its a big image you get in...

Is there a camera out there for me?

This looks like it does much the same thing and was what I referred to in my previous post. Its a Cullmann Table Pod. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cullmann-Cruiser-Mx445-Table-Release/dp/B0045HNKCO

Is there a camera out there for me?

I think you might be right about that shoulder pod. If you look at the link to all the images I sent, you will see another different type they produce, I think that may be the new version. Not sure why they needed to change the old one, as it worked perfectly.

Is there a camera out there for me?

I nearly always take binoculars, but on many occasions they are essential. With the FZ1000, you won't need any extra lenses. The shoulder pod is light and when folded, very small. It has a loop on it so you can attach it to something, like a cord. It would fit in a reasonably sized pocket. Do...

Is there a camera out there for me?

You might also want to look at Shoulder Pods. I have a Cullmann. They give you about the same stability as a monopod, but are smaller, lighter and more flexible. You can even use them as a mini tripod, as the model I have has three "feet" that open out that form part of the shoulder pad, but can...

    Greetings from Costa Rica

Hi Ray, I was in Costa Rica last year and at the time had my FZ200 with its 24x zoom (600mm 35mm equivalent). Panasonic cameras allow you to reduce the megapixel size of the image to increase your zoom, so that gave me a 1200mm equivalent. I found that I didn't need to use it at that range all...

    New Member already wanting help

Welcome Bill. I have the FZ200 and the FZ1000. If I didn't already have the FZ1000, I would buy the FZ330 in an instant. While its ultimate image quality might not quite be up there with the FZ1000, in good light there would be very little difference. Its also cheaper, smaller and has basically...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

Hi Glenn, I can't tell you the best software for extracting 4k video stills, although I believe you can do it in Lightroom. I always take it from the camera. The 4kvideo is an MP4 file, so you're on the right track there, although you can also have full HD as a MP4 file. As long as you have 4k...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

This is a very annoying feature of the FZ1000, which also happened in the FZ100/150 and 200. There is no way it can be turned off. A lot of people have complained about this for a long time and Panasonic can't, or won't do anything about it. I don't know why they don't give you the option to...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

I did read somewhere that Sony keeps its new technology for a year before allowing it to filter through to other brands. If this is correct and it may not be, then don't expect to see any new sensors in Panasonic, or other brands featuring the new technology for a year or so. If that statement...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

I've seen some great results from the P900 at full zoom. I've been told that its a bit slow in clearing its buffer, taking around 1 second for each shot, so 10 shots takes 10 seconds to clear and you can't use the camera during that time. However its image quality is very good. My...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

If you do this, which sounds quite a logical thing to do, just make sure that before you transfer them back to the camera you take one photo (can be of the floor, it doesn't matter, just take a shot of anything). The reason for that is it creates a folder on the SD card where you drop the files...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

The video footage looked great and as you say, even the cropped version looked good. Plus I could hear the call, so that's another bonus.

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

Once again the 4k video does a great job. I am using it more and more myself. I find that because the 4k video uses up a lot of hard disc space, I'm tending to save a few pics from the clip in camera, then after I've downloaded the images to the computer, I then ditch the clip from the computer...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

Hi Hobbes, I was just wondering, after thinking about your issue, whether or not you have image stabilisation turned off? If its on, its possible it could create the issue you are talking about.

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

Here are a couple of shots of more static birds where I find the use of 4k video ideal. The albatross shot does have a bird in flight in the shot, but that was an accident, I was filming the albatross, when this shearwater flew past.

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

The video captured the birds in flight very well, plus I think your idea of filming them standing on the beach "just in case" was a great idea. I have expressed frustration before at the lag in 4K video starting and stopping and the sort of birds in flight that I am attempting doesn't work...

    Panasonic FZ1000 Review...

Hi Ken, a fine series of 4k still shots. Love the little bird in the second shot. 4k video really is changing the way I use my camera a lot of the time. I have heard about 8k video. The stills from a camera that had something like that would be incredible.

I think that second gull shot does look a bit sharper.
