    Uganda: Pipit-like bird

I am reluctant to intervene with two titans of birdforum slugging it out. But what about the hind claw? Is it not supposed to be long in an african pipit (it was even deemed cospecific with richards pipit by some once) It was one of the main characteristics I was told to look out for when...

    Red-billed or black-bellied firefinch, Uganda

Balck-bellied has an eye ring. Here is one of many examples http://www.avitoon.nl/en/exotic-birds/my-birds/black-bellied-firefinch/ Rob

    Red-billed or black-bellied firefinch, Uganda

Seen in Entebbe today. The eye ring isn't so yellow, the mandible appears pink below and darker-blacker above, there are no white spots on the flanks, the vent is dark entending on to the belly. It doesn't look a great fit for red-billed which I know well. However, there are apparently two...

    Aberrant reed warbler? Mauritania

Lots of passage still in Nouakchott today. This was one of the warblers. I can only make it into a European reed warbler regrowing an almost white tail. What is it please? All help gratefully received as ever. Rob

    Black or common redstart, Mauritania

Seen at first light today. Common redstart is a common passage bird in Nouakchott. Black redstart is a rare wintering one. My camera doesn't cope well with poor light. As far as I can see, the weakish eye ring supports black redstart while the light throat supports common redstart. The...

Western Reef or Little Egret, Eilat North Beach, Israel (13.03. & 20.03.)

Western reef heron for me but this one is tough even though I get lots of practice down here. Yes, the curvature and thickness of the bill are important as is the general robustness of the overall form. Little egret is normally obviously more elegant than the reef egret. Most of your pictures...

Mauritanian Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea monicae)?

I have been in Mauritania full time for over 18 months now and I still find the separation difficult between "Pallid heron" and grey heron. I have been to Banc d'Arguin where they breed and have being seeing dispersed birds in Nouackhott including today. It is best to see both sub species side...
