    The last post...

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. This is very sad news indeed. My view on taxonomy and all related matters will never be the same again, without Richard clarifying or referring to another article or source...

    The last post...

Richard: like many already mentioned, you are/were the main reason why I visit(ed) this subforum. Your contributions were always very thourough. Very sad to read about your illness: I wish you all the best. You will be missed.

    Anatidae

Vincent van der Spek reviewed Reeber (2015) on the website of Dutch Birding - in English

    Anatidae

Well, I just got my copy and a first quick look at it leaves me impressed. The plates alone are really worth it! Many (and I really mean many!) hybrids are illustrated both in photos as well as plates. To be honest, the text is rather dissapointing: I haven't checked the ID stuff yet, but the...

    Struthideidae

Bird Families of the World Am I the only one who doesn't really see the need for this book? Sure, it does look nice but having all the HBW volumes as well as volume 1 of the Checklist, this book seems a bit odd... I do understand that this new book is a nice overview of all bird families, but...

    Robins are flycatchers?

Cheers. Got my copy just now. Looks fantastic!

    Robins are flycatchers?

Cheers Richard. I hope to receive my copy later today or tomorrow. I was wondering whether stejnegeri receives a proper treatment?

    Bullfinches

As part of the WP list updates feature in Dutch Birding, we are aware of WP records of Grey Bullfinch (for quite some time now) and we are currently planning an article on its occurrence.

Howard and Moore 4th edition - Passerines

I received an email today telling me that, because I previously ordered volume 1, I will receive a discount after all. Excellent service, I have to say! :t:

Hmm. That's a bit too late as I already ordered it yesterday...

    Hudsonian Whimbrel split

Of course, I should have known better... Nothing seems to escape your attention ;) The intervals are five or six years, so it might be published this year still or next year?

    Hudsonian Whimbrel split

Needless to say, the reports above concern changes of concern to the Dutch list only, so the WP names list and the changes in each first issues regarding WP species not on the Dutch list are omitted, of course. This probably explains why Hudsonian Whimbrel is not mentioned in these 'official'...

    Hudsonian Whimbrel split

Richard: Indeed, all CSNA decisions are followed by Dutch Birding (the journal). The CSNA produces a list of changes which you refer to here when it's published (always in the first issue of a volume). The summary of these lists are the basis of the 'official' taxonomic reports. The 'official'...

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

A bit of self promoting here... ;) (and indeed it seems like you've got the year wrong).

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

And African Fish Eagle is already on the WP list, based on a record in Egypt in 1947.

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

Common Pheasant should have been in category A indeed, as it occurs in the Caucasus. Well spotted!

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

You are absolutely right, of course! Got my martins confused... That's what you get when you don't check the reference again... My bad!

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

That's great news Ottavio! I was told it had no chance of being accepted as a genuine vagrant... But glad that's not the case! Any thoughts on the October 1957 record?

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

Cheers Graeme. RE Arabian Golden Sparrow: I know of this record (of course) but didn't know yet that it has been accepted onto the Kuwaiti list. Was it accepted as a genuine vagrant? RE chinensis: well, I am not sure whether it is accepted by the Israeli RC. I know I have corresponded about...

Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (EBN Italia)

After months of research and discussions, we are happy to announce the EBN Italia Checklist of the birds of the Western Palearctic (WP). The list exists of species reliably recorded in the WP (sensu Cramp et al 1977-1994) and, more importantly, also lists all subspecies recorded within the WP...

    Oman Bird List 7

An excellent edition once again, with many photographs added since the sixth edition. But, in light of the recent "Slender-billed Curlew-debacle", turn to page 94 where a record of two Slender-billed Curlews is listed as having occurred at Khawr Dhurf as 'recently' as 10 February 1999! Mind...

    Peterson Reference Guide to Seawatching

It is a hundred times better than that one! At least in my opinion... A very thorough book with several European species also included (although I do not have access to the book at the moment, so I cannot look at the contents). The photographs in the European guide are often very bad... In this...

    Omani Owl

Indeed they have looked at this. They have looked at all Strix specimens collected in Arabia, and all turned out to be Hume's. They have looked at the holotype of Hume's as well (kept in Tring) and that is a proper Hume's (but no location was given for the type specimen).
