Thanks; I'll pass this on to him. :-D

    Black-Chinned Hummingbird?

HI everyone! Posting this for a friend; he took this video in Guatemala this week; his ID is Black-Chinned Hummingbird and he would like confirmation, since they are not reported in Guatemala. Can Black-Chinned be confirmed and Ruby-Throated (winter visitors here) be ruled out? This video is...

    The Rubies are back!

I am! They don't generally spend the whole winter here (I'm at too high an elevation for them) but this year I've had very low numbers :-( I'm still getting two females, and one day last week I had a male.

    The Rubies are back!

I have two females visiting regularly, but it's been a disappointing season. Nowhere near the swarms (literally dozens) of rubies I had last year. But the good news is, my Green Violet-Ear has become a regular visitor, and this week a visiting male Baltimore Oriole seems to have found the...

    Hummingbird id please

    Ok, great. Thank you!

    Hummingbird id please

So you rule out Ruby-Throated? I assume based on too much color around the flanks in the second photo?

    The Rubies are back!

I now have one or two females on my feeders at any given time. Nothing like the swarms I had last year!

    The Rubies are back!

Two females and one juvie male today. They sure are taking their time this year!

    The Rubies are back!

Hmm, it's strange. I'm still seeing only occasional individuals. Last year at this time I had them by the dozens!

    New to hummingbirds, have questions.

I agree that it's often easier to see hummers up close than other birds; but the recommendations above are good. At least here, they try to sell you greater magnification but you want a balance between magnification and lens diameter so your field of vision and light gathering aren't too...

    The Rubies are back!

I haven't seen one for two or three days :-(

    The Rubies are back!

I'm still just seeing occasional individuals; but if you northerners are seeing fewer surely I'll soon be seeing more!

    The Rubies are back!

Great! Send them down! The past few days I've only seen an orange-Throated male; I assume the same one each time.

    The Rubies are back!

OOH can't wait until they get here! I'm still just seeing occasional individuals - had a gorgeous adult male on my feeder a few minutes ago. Hope I get a lot soon! Its fun watching them fight with the locals, all several times their size!

    The Rubies are back!

Yep they should be on the way! Hope they find your new place fast!

    The Rubies are back!

Yeah, I haven't seen another one since yesterday morning :-( They were around until mid-late November last couple of years; one lone female stayed until January both years. I'm at a higher elevation than their preferred wintering grounds!

    Mason Jar Feeder

Yeah, mine are transparent too. It wasn't much work to assemble them - on the orange one, I just put holes in the lid and later added pieces of drinking straw when they ignored it. The bottle one involved cutting a hole for the bottleneck and drinking holes, and later adding straws too. I...

    The Rubies are back!

FINALLY got my first migrating Ruby-Throated Hummingbird this morning (a female) - 10 days later than last year, so I was getting worried. Glad to see her again!!

    Mason Jar Feeder

OOps forgot to post the pics... And Carjug, are they able to drink all the nectar or is the mason jar too deep for that?

    Mason Jar Feeder

Well, I crocheted sweaters for mine and the birds still aren't interested. I've made several changes, adding more holes, enlarging them, and adding the red straws, but nothing!

So far it is. Such a stunning bird!

    Help with Hummer ID

Thank you! I got confirmation from a friend, too, and seeing the bird again in brighter sunlight I was able to id the key field marks (band on tail,"ears" look purplish in the right light). Appreciate the help!

    Help with Hummer ID

Hummers are SO hard to identify! New at my feeder today (hope s/he stays around, unlike the Rufous Sabrewings that visited for a few weeks and then were gone). Medium size - a bit bigger than a White-Eared, not as big as a Magnificent. Green on top, blue underneath; noticeable blue auricular...

When can I fill my feeder?

    Lol!!!

When can I fill my feeder?

We normally go six months without rain, and it does teach you to appreciate it! Thanks for the compliment ;-) but English is my first language; I'm from the US but have lived down here for a number of years. However, my Spanish is really good too! ;)
