    Pallid Harrier - Portugal

Hi all. Saw this juvenile harrier today near Lisbon. Head pattern with very limited white and black lore, unspotted neck boa, neck boa shape and plain chest make me lean towards pallid and not montagu's. Inputs welcome. Regards Frederico

Harrier for id - pygargus 2cy?

Hi all. Saw this harrier yesterday near Lisbon, Portugal. It was a bit distant and the photos are not 5* but good enough, I think. Here is the link for more pics if needed: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zbkmjETxEcviADpJ8 I thought about a circus pygargus 2cy. Can someone give an input? Thanks...

    Chiffchaff for id - subspecies

Hi all. I saw this chiffchaff a couple of weeks ago and it seemed a little odd. Cannot quite put it on any of the subspecies that occur over here. I thought of tristis but the plumage seems a little too warm for that. Attached are some pictures with and without sun. Also a link for more pics...

Question about Eurasian Magpie - Mahachai Forest 2013

Thanks McMadd for pointing me to the thread. It seems the magpie is rare in Thailand. Had I known about it, I would have taken some pictures. At the time I did not know and the guide did not warn me about it either. For an European visiting for the first time, it was just a Magpie. So, for me...

    Magpie taxonomy

Hi. I was asking a question about a magpie in Thailand in another thread (https://www.birdforum.net)/showthread.php?t=365819 Another user pointed me to this one. So I saw an Eurasian Magpie in 2013 in Thailand, in the Mahachai forest reserve. It is more or less 30km south-west of Bangkok...

Question about Eurasian Magpie - Mahachai Forest 2013

Hi all. Was checking my Thai list from my trip back in 2013. I have an Eurasian Magpie (pica pica) seen in the Mahachai mangrove Forest on the 22/01/2013. My question is if this could now be a pica serica, with the recent split on the IOC. Thanks Frederico

Possible Pallid Harrier - Female - Portugal

Hi All. First of all, thanks for your help. Females are never easy. Thanks Tom. That is what I was seeing in the book pictures. Still could not find in the text but must re-read it over the weekend. Unfortunately a bridge is all I have. I chose the "best" 5 pics for the initial post. Here's...

Possible Pallid Harrier - Female - Portugal

Tib78, can you pls elaborate? Is that feature diagnostic for any of the species? I could not find it on forsman (still did not check Duivendijk). Thanks Frederico

Possible Pallid Harrier - Female - Portugal

Hi all. Photographed this circus yesterday near Lisbon. I ticked it as a Montagu's but the dark secondaries raised some questions at the time. Reading the Forsman guide I'm now more inclined towards a female Pallid. (Hen did not cross my mind at any time due to the narrow wing either in the...

Bats for Id - Andalucia - Spain

Thanks for your answer Dan. Will take a look at the page. I confess my total ignorance regarding bats. The trip reports from the same place do not refer the Miniopterus schreibersii anywhere. I was convinced they were Myotis sp. Regards Frederico

Bats for Id - Andalucia - Spain

Hi Peter. Thanks for your reply. In terms of size it's hard to say but I would say at least 10cm. Could they be myotis myotis? myotis daubentonii? A lot of trip reports from the area refer those species as observed in the same tunnel.

Leica - Gitzo head and tripod equivalents

Hi Alexis. Actually what happened was much more problematic. One of the legs fell off during one of my trips. Not good if you are in the middle of the jungle... Let's see if I can explain what happened clearly enough. The top segment of the leg has a screw that holds it to the metal part on...

Leica - Gitzo head and tripod equivalents

Hi Jerry. Thanks for the reply. Hum...It seems next time I have a problem with this tripod the obvious choice is to buy a new one. I love the head but I've never been a great fan of the tripod legs. Regards and Merry Christmas Frederico

Leica - Gitzo head and tripod equivalents

Hi all. I have a Leica Trica 1 Tripod (42223) with a Leica DH1 Head (42226) (= Gitzo G2180) I was wondering if anyone knew what are the Gitzo equivalents/twins to this parts. I think that the head is equal to "Gitzo G2180" but what about the tripod itself ? I recently had some problems with...

    Algarve sept 13 - 27 2015

Hi Simon. I'm with Alan on this one. Although I wasn't counting, 200 seems a lot even if we count the birds following the fishing boat. I would be more comfortable with a number between 50 and 100. However, I can be mistaken. Perhaps there was someone in the other boat that was really...
