    Late Warblers

First time I've been told to "grow up" for many a year :t: So... giving BirdForum a bad name. Well, to some maybe, but to others the boot is on the other foot... You know, I actually think BirdForum has the potential to be a really good resource, where people come to learn and debate. But for...

    Late Warblers

So your "couple of wintering Barred Warblers" is basically one late bird seen on one day. And the Reed Warbler? Bascially, talking rubbish. Typical DudeForum posting...

    Late Warblers

Whilst you're on, I'd also be interested to know where and when Reed Warbler has been found wintering in the UK in the last 3 or 4 years? BT

    Late Warblers

Martin, When and where exactly have these "couple" of Barred Warblers "found wintering" in the "last 3 or 4 years" in the UK been, please? I remember a bird back in late '04 that stayed into early Dec in Lincs, plus a one day bird that appeared in Cambs in mid Dec '07. And that's it, as far...

    Late Warblers

There are more Pallas's and far more Yellow-brows wintering in the UK than Whitethroat, Garden and especially Barred Warblers....

Need ID on two birds Pipit ? Thrush ?

Nikon Kid, as requested at the start of the Bird ID forum, in furutre can you always put the location of your photos in the title of the thread, helps many. And yes, as has been said, they are Reed Buntings.

    Rough Legged Hawk or Buzzard

To add a bit more detail on the Scilly bird... It was found on 3rd October 2001. I've just dug out my notes, and I saw it on the 8th October over St Mary's; the day before I'd seen a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the airfield, and two days later went over to Tresco to see what was almost certainly...

    Rough Legged Hawk or Buzzard

    1) Very early arrival date for a RLB (early October) 2) No other RLB's were in the UK at that time, yet one arrived in Scilly 3) Westerly weather systems 4) Neactic support cast

Yellowhammer? - ID confirmation - Romania

Nice photo, and yes a Yellowhammer.

    Alaska Cruise - 5 IDs needed (1 of 2)

For what it's worth, I too agree with Ancient; the white underwing gives the game away.

    Rough Legged Hawk or Buzzard

My memory suggests that this pale phase of Rough-legged can't be seperated in the field, rather we need a dark-morph which is only found in Rough-legged Hawk (hence the problem with proving the presumed Rough-legged Hawk on Scilly a good few Octobers ago)

Grackle? - Cape May, New Jersey, US

Sure is a Grackle; blue/purple head sheen, white iris and tail shape with 'turned up' corners all say Grackle. Hard to get Common or Boat-tailed for me from the angle, and hard to know tail length from this angle too....

    Alaska Cruise - 5 IDs needed (1 of 2)

Good shout SJC; having just blown the photo up I see the black on the axillsries too, so am with you on that one.

    Savannah Sparrow ??? Arkansas, USA

And me; too rufous for a Lincoln's. Strangely, I ticked Swamp Sparrow in Arkansas....

    What Duck? Inverness area

Which book are you using? One without Tufted Duck would be a problem for you; many people here on the forum could help suggest alternatives

    Alaska Cruise - 5 IDs needed (1 of 2)

Having had another look, and quite a number of these are really hard to call.... 1) On the duck with the Surf Scoters, the suggest of purple on the head gloss and the head shape suggest Lesser Scaup to me 8) Yes, certainly Red-necked Phalaropes, the dark marking on the underwing rule our Grey...

    Alaska Cruise - 5 IDs needed (1 of 2)

Indeed; 3 is a dark-phase Northern Fulmar as well rather than a Sooty Shear

    Alaska Cruise - 5 IDs needed (1 of 2)

Oh no it doesn't! The lack of white in the wings is a good clue that these aren't White-winged Scoters ;) There are three Surf Scoters, and as you said a scaup sp.

    Query Slimbridge Escapee

Ah ha! Now I see what's going on. My comment was based on the photo you posted Peter, which is certainly a pure Bar-headed Goose, but I see that's not the bird you were commenting on, rather the OP's bird. Crossed-wires, then... I hope you don't disagree that the photo you posted is a pure...

Me too, can't see a reason to suggest anything other than a Bar-headed here?

    Yellow-Legged Gulls??

Yeah, it looks a little like the old path to Gun Hill before it was re-done...

    Yellow-Legged Gulls??

Wow, what a rant. WiseOwl, put your teddies back into the cot. Maybe it didn't cross your mind that sometimes birders go out birding rather than sitting on their PC's all day... Harsh truth; 1) Your photos aren't good enough to get a positive ID, they could be YLG or more likely LBBG 2) Most...

    Black-headed Gull? in California

The dark-centred tertial is an unmoulted previous generation feather, rather than it being a feature of Black-headed Gull. It's a Bonaparte's Gull.

    Bird ID northern Sweden

    Nice; it's a (Bohemian) Waxwing.

    Egret sp Cyprus

Here's a good pic of a Western Reef Egret; http://www.hawar-islands.com/blog/media/blogs/kuwait/WR-Heron_P1.jpg. To, this bird is less like the Cyprus bird than a Little Egret... I'm still going with a variant Little Egret, but does anyone know if Little and Cattle Egret have been recorded...
