    Ruby throated humming birds!

BTW, What kind of snakes were those? Buddlea is considered an invasive specie so keep your eye on that. I have them in my yard too but never had them spread unless I propagated them. Great for both butterflies and hummingbirds. Here, Lantana (in pots) attracts both really well, too.

    Ruby throated humming birds!

Wow! After seeing all your pics I can see how you keep yourself off the streets, out of trouble and happily occupied. Lots of really nice fish and some of the most unusual guitars I have ever seen. I am surprised that your Buddlea is in bloom already. The butterflies were a treat as well...

    A Hawk of some kind

Here are two crummy photos of what it looks like flying away, low to the ground, swooping downward over a house and out of sight. It was smaller than a Sparrow or Marsh Hawk who also come in occasionally. Perhaps more of a clue.

    A Hawk of some kind

This one surprised me. It was sitting at the front gate as I was leaving the house and didn't startle while I reached for the camera the hawk being focused on the little birds in the shrubs. No bigger than perhaps a foot in length. Pale looking underside when it flew off. Wings brown on top.

    Canada's resident hummingbirds

This gent has a mustache! It's not just a one day thing and helps to distinguish him from the others. PS could not find a way to upload from imgur

    Canada's resident hummingbirds

I had a great season this year though my computer had a time out . The Rufous came and went, as they always do and the resident Anna's are left to fend off each other from the few remaining flowers. I supply them with feeders all winter so that they may thrive rather than just survive. This was...

Sugar water...boil or not?? Cloudy sugar water!

Hi, I boil then add the sugar and mix til dissolved but I don't have to make up more than 1 cup at a time. Having read this whole thread, I was reminded that using hot tap water from a hot water tank may not always be a healthy thing to drink or use for cooking depending on the particular...

    frustrated

The one bowl type feeder I found here (margarita glass) is not used by them. I have a few of the other sort and none of them have leaked at that point. One I like started to leak where the lower part snaps on at the bottom. Some plumbers tape has fixed that problem.

    plants

Yes, you're right about the salvia. There are a few varieties they like. Agastache - hummingbird mint is another sort of plant to look for. Monarda is a big fave. Honey suckle ditto. I've read that trumpet vine - Campsis is another fave. i did a short search and found this list...

    Rufous Hummingbirds

Would this be different flights of migrating birds,"" Hi, That's my best guess. When my regular hummingbirds (Anna's and Rufous) are here they come every day, the same few with maybe an extra visitor or so. When they are nesting they are not in the yard much but do come for regular visits to...

Horrible experience at my feeder today

Stickers need to go on the OUTSIDE of the window glass. If the sticker is on the inside the glass will still reflect and more crashes will happen. Years ago I cleaned my sliding glass doors and did not return the stickers - once only! OUCH!

    Rufous

I am not too too far from you and have had Anna's wintering over for a few years with reports coming out of Nanoose in the news for years. I have never seen a Rufous stay and am surprised to hear about that one. I got my first Rufous of the year last night. The Annas have been bathing most of...

    Hummigbird Predators

While checking out some hb links I came across this title and found a freaky photo of a caught hummingbird. I am glad to say we have nothing so predatory here. I have only seen one story where a hummingbird was speared by another long beak, a woodpecker in the US somewhere. Around here it seems...

    feeder types

"So I think they easily figure out any feeder." LOL Not always. It took the young male a while to find the easiest way to use the home made unit. But I was adjusting the cover over it and he came and fed while I had a hand on top and beside. He used the right portal I noticed, at last, after...

    Hummingbird Feeder Experience

I saw some similar ones at a store that were hanging. I checked to see if the syrup holder was deep or shallow. With a deep one the hummingbirds surely can't get their tongues down that far, can they? The ones I saw were plastic and did have a shallow dish. I think there'd be a lot of wasted...

    article HB's Like Noise???

At least, the Black Chinned Hummingbirds seem to, according to this article. "21 March 2012 Last updated at 11:19 Man-made noise disrupts the growth of plants and trees By Victoria Gill Science reporter, BBC Nature The study is published in the Royal Society Proceedings B. The team, led by...

    Winter Hummingbirds Vancouver Island BC

It is still a cool beginning of Spring here with below zero temps sometimes overnight as it was last night. Practically at first light, at 7:30 am, the resident male Annas was bathing! Roofs are still frosty but that does not deter the little one from bathing after his first sips at the feeder...

    Winter Hummingbirds Vancouver Island BC

Perhaps i should look into something more photogenic, eh?"" As long as the hb's use it, who cares! In some parts of the world, stainless table ware is considered posh. I wouldn't have known that the fountain was for any particular use if you hadn't mentioned it. So, do re-purpose it and see if...

    feeder types

One of the male Anna's here, the one who has been here since August, checks out the crack where the plastic feeder snaps together, as if it leaks a bit there. He does this frequently before he dips his bill the regular way. He seems not to like to dip too far. I have one egg shaped feeder with...

    Hummingbird Memory

It would be nice to recognize individuals."" Do you get too many to do that? I have a web-cam/hummycam that I have set up so I can tell who's who, at least between the Annas. I get a close look and can take pics of them and their gorgets which have differing patterns. If there were a lot more...
