    A Hawk of some kind

This one surprised me. It was sitting at the front gate as I was leaving the house and didn't startle while I reached for the camera the hawk being focused on the little birds in the shrubs. No bigger than perhaps a foot in length. Pale looking underside when it flew off. Wings brown on top.

    Canada's resident hummingbirds

I had a great season this year though my computer had a time out . The Rufous came and went, as they always do and the resident Anna's are left to fend off each other from the few remaining flowers. I supply them with feeders all winter so that they may thrive rather than just survive. This was...

    Hummigbird Predators

While checking out some hb links I came across this title and found a freaky photo of a caught hummingbird. I am glad to say we have nothing so predatory here. I have only seen one story where a hummingbird was speared by another long beak, a woodpecker in the US somewhere. Around here it seems...

    Winter Hummingbirds Vancouver Island BC

When I saw some Annas last winter I started using syrup to feed them. They usually come around for the Jasmine Nudiflorum which blooms all winter under an overhanging roof out of rain and snow. When my son asked me what they do when it gets cold, I said they snug in and just turn into...

    Canada West Coast - Annas

Here it is with snow flurries in the forecast and there are still hummingbirds about. There seem to be 3 males at various stages of maturity. I think the oldest is one who wintered here last year as he is calm when I appear in the yard. And one female, so far. They have come in to feed on the...

    1st Baby

Mummy Hummy brings her babes to my yard to stay while she goes off food gathering I suppose. Lots of shrubs for safety here and flowers, plus the feeder this year. After using one all winter I hate to take it away from them now. I think this first one is a boy (Annas) but there are no markings...

How to Stop Birds Flying into Windows ?

Hi, I lost a hummingbird and a Waxwing last Spring to house windows. Robins were constantly throwing themselves against the kitchen window....thump....thud.....but they are a hardier lot and there are never any bodies. My daughter, how nice that our children are smarter than we are, :) told me...

    WInter Hummies in BC

Hi, I think I am organized enough to share now... At least for the last two years I have read that there have been people reporting hummingbirds over the winters not too from here, just a little closer to the water. I am a few blocks away from the ocean which is the Georgia Straight part of it...

    Joining the Flock

Hi, Dana here from the West coast of Canada, the East coast of Vancouver Island on the inside, where we live in what is said to be a Mediterranean-like climate, without the warm temperatures. I am not a 'real' birder but have fed, watched and now, since buying myself a retirement gift of a...
