    2017 UK orchids

I'm going to be in Dorset on Wednesday/Thursday. I don't know if it's a bit late, but will Bog Orchid still be in flower? If anyone can recommend a site (preferably with incredibly specific directions to the exact spot) I'd be delighted.

    2017 UK orchids

Thanks everyone for Chilterns advice - saw lady, monkey and hybrids at Hartslock + white helleborines. Also saw military orchids, greater butterfly orchids just in flower, common spotted orchids and one of the best displays of fly orchids I've seen. No sign of any club-tails though!

    2017 UK orchids

Hi all - I'm spending a few days in the Chilterns at the end of next week. I've seen photographs from Hartslock already showing Lady (guessing it'll be past its best next week) and plenty of hybrids coming up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an early pure Monkey amongst them. I wondered if...

    Which Fragrant Orchid?

Hi all, I saw this orchid in June 2015 in the North York Moors. Clearly a fragrant orchid, and the small cluster of flowers made me wonder if it could be a Heath Fragrant Orchid? It was found amongst grass, a few meters away from acid-habitat plants such as ling and, further down the slope...

    Norfolk birding

I'm hoping to get to Norfolk on Saturday for the Pallid Harrier. Happy to get there early to try and see it leaving roost - but would appreciate directions/details of where it has been roosting and seen leaving roost - don't know the area very well, I'm afraid!

    2015 UK Orchids

I've suddenly decided to visit Lancs/Cumbria for High Brown Fritillary this Thursday. Also hoping to go to Gait Barrows for Dark Red Helleborine. Anything else in the area I could add in whilst I'm there? Any other Helleborines? Any hybrids? Can Lesser Twayblade be found in the area? Any info...

    2015 UK Orchids

Bit of a broad question, but I'm driving up from Bedfordshire to East Yorkshire this weekend. Anyone know any sites along the way for Early Marsh Orchid, Marsh Fragrant Orchid, any species of Helleborine or any weird hybrids? Cheers!

    2015 UK Orchids

Cheers for the advice, found them with no difficulty with your instructions. Most were in good flower last night - it was so warm that butterflies were flying after 9pm! Might be a bit late in the year now, but does anyone know of a Bird's-nest Orchid in Bedfordshire/South-west Cambs? I have...

    2015 UK Orchids

Cheers Ian, I'm taking your advice and I'm planning on going after work on Tuesday - give them a bit more time to come into flower. I've visited the knolls before for Man Orchid but haven't seen Musk there before - any chance you could give me some direction? PM if at all sensitive. Thanks...

    2015 UK Orchids

Does anyone know if Musk Orchids are flowering yet at Totternhoe, Bedfordshire? Hoping to fit a trip in as soon as I know they're out - I know Musk's are out further south in the country.

I noticed there is an open day at Catfield Fen this coming Sunday - is this too early for Fen Orchid? http://butterfly-conservation.org/291-5058/norfolk---catfield-fen-open-day.html

    Norfolk birding

Hi everyone. I'm an out-of-county birder who's hoping to get to the Steppe Grey Shrike tomorrow (finally!). Any chance of some very specific directions for someone who doesn't know the area at all? Cheers.

    2014 UK Orchids

I'm driving up to Holy Island, Northumberland from Scarborough this coming Friday (27th) and then back down on the Sunday. I'm hoping to see some DR Helleborines at Bishop Middleham on the way, and hopefully there might be a few Marsh Helleborines on Holy Island. I'm probably a bit early for...

    2014 UK Orchids

I'm considering spending a day in Norfolk this weekend (and I'll be passing through Suffolk) - does anyone have any locations for Marsh Fragrant Orchid, Early Marsh Orchid, Pugsley’s Marsh Orchid, Fen Orchid, Frog Orchid, Bird's Nest Orchid or any of the helleborines? Or any odd hybrids? I know...

    UK dragonflies and damselflies, 2014

Does anyone know the specifics of where the Norfolk Lesser Emperors and Red-Veined Darters were being seen today? Tempted to go across tomorrow/Sunday. Might see a warbler whilst I'm there as well, make a day of it.

    'killer snakes' in London

My sister visited London Zoo yesterday and accidentally bumped into two aesculapian snakes. I now hate her, of course. I'm thinking of going this coming Sunday - I think it will be warm enough. I don't know much about specifics of where and when to look for them, but I can't stand being...

Is the main path you mention the one leading from the car park on Wittering Road? Also, later in the season, does Barnack still get Frog Orchid?

    2014 UK Orchids

Hi everyone, I'm visiting Gait Barrows for the first time this coming weekend to (hopefully) see Lady's Slipper Orchid. Does anyone on here know the area well enough to suggest any other species I could see in the area? The only other idea I've had so far is possibly coralroot orchid on...

    UK herps 2014

Portman Ravine is great for Wall Lizards; I was there from about 7.30 am last weekend and saw plenty basking on the walls. I found the Green Lizards a bit more tricky - I ended up looking on the cliffs themselves just to the west of the zig-zag, behind the beach huts. I did get asked to stop...

    2014 UK Orchids

There's a chance I could be in Hampshire at the weekend - is it possible to get advice on where the Sword-Leaved Helleborine site is? I know they won't be at their best, but I might not be able to make it down in a few weeks. Any Bird's Nests at the same site? Also, that picture of the Bee x...

    2014 UK Orchids

I might be visiting Dorset in the first weekend in April (5th & 6th) and I was wondering what the chances were of seeing Early Spider in flower. I'm a little concerned I might be a week too early! Wondered if anyone here had seen them in previous years, or lived locally and knew if they were...

    Norfolk birding

Hi there, hope you don't mind me posting this on the main thread, but I was hoping to visit Norfolk from out of county tomorrow - hoping to try and see Thayer's Gull and Parrot crossbills. Unfortunately I've managed to drop and ruin my scope today, so I wondered if anyone else was looking for...

    Scotland, Hybrid Grouse

I don't know if this is quite the right place to be posting these, but I wanted some advice. I recently came across this article from an early 'British Birds' journal. It's about two specimens of putative hybrids between Red Grouse and Ptarmigan. I just wondered if anyone could explain to me...
