    LBJ Skulker - Vienna, Austria

Awesome - much appreciated. Thanks Ken :t:

    LBJ Skulker - Vienna, Austria

Taped this and played back and although I caught glimpses of the bird flitting about in the hedgerows it refused to show. Ditto with a couple more during the 3 hour walk in woodland/fields a couple of days ago. Birds would respond strongly but refuse to show. Any ideas ? Great singers/song...

Crossfire 10-50 or 12-50 for short term use?

Thanks Chuck ! I've come back in this morning especially to correct that error but found that I couldn't edit that post. I've discovered that the 'scratches' on the coatings were actually from some substance or other. I couldn't remove it, whatever it was, in the field with a little spit and...

Crossfire 10-50 or 12-50 for short term use?

Second Thoughts 1. I'm still impressed with these bins. The weight doesn't bother me in the slightest, they don't 'feel' heavy. Do note that as a photographer I'm used to carrying far heavier equipment though. 2. They are very good in low light - the 4.2mm exit pupil giving a nice bright view...

Vienna, Austria. Small selection without an ID

Nice video distinguishing Chiffchaffs from Willow Warblers if, like me, there is any difficulty : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wixRxZ94dMc&t=0s

Vienna, Austria. Small selection without an ID

Awesome - thanks ! I hadn't considered Kestrel because I was in deep woods (though a field was not far away), I did get some shots of one close by in a tall tree, now I think of it (and there are LOTS of Kestrels here). Oriole is very interesting because I was wondering where to find them here...

Crossfire 10-50 or 12-50 for short term use?

Initial Thoughts 1. They don't feel weighty at all. Actually kind of slim/light to what I was expecting. These are supposed to be heavier than my Leica Ultravids back home but I don't get that impression. 2. The Chest Case is really nice. It will make carrying these around a doddle. 3. The...

Vienna, Austria. Small selection without an ID

Continued 6. Seems like a different Reed Warbler to the one above? You're very welcome to have a go at these too ! If they are common birds it will save me time looking for them when heard. 7. Sound Recording A 8. Sound Recording B 9. Sound Recording C Thanks ! :t: Kevin

Vienna, Austria. Small selection without an ID

So lucky me I'm still stuck here unable to go home (or travel) therefore the local woods are getting a real workout (new bins arrived today) ! Since I'm not a 'European birder' per se I'm not conversant with many of the birds here (I didn't bird in the UK during my youth) and I'm relying on...

Crossfire 10-50 or 12-50 for short term use?

Well I ended up buying the Crossfire 12x50 so will report back later on how I went on with them.

    10x50/54 format

Thanks ! A bit expensive to use for 3-4 months (and I need at least 10x42) but I'd love a pair of Swarovskis when I ditch my Leicas so I'll bear these in mind (I have family in Vienna so will be back here often). :t:

    10x50/54 format

I checked out 7-8 camera stores last week. Ridiculously expensive. Far better off buying from EBay or Amazon I'm afraid and even that's expensive compared to China where I'm resident (which is roughly equivalent to US pricing). I'd love the Swarovski binos but I don't want a divorce (at least...

Crossfire 10-50 or 12-50 for short term use?

I am currently stuck in Vienna due to CV-19 (and my 10x42 Ultravids are at home) and so need a pair of cheapish but decent bins to get me by (and offload when I get home). So I was looking for a pair of Vortex Diamondback HD 10x42 (I should be able to sell these easily when I return home)...

    10x50/54 format

Interesting reading this thread as I am currently stuck in Vienna due to CV-19 (and my 10x42 Ultravids are at home). So I'm going to buy a pair of cheap but good bins here and although I was looking for a pair of Vortex Diamondback HD 10x42 (I should be able to sell these easily when I return...

Thank you ! Assuming I survive this then I'll go to those places once the restrictions on movement are lifted. :t:

    Red Squirrels in Vienna

Woodpeckers : Yes there were lots in the park ! Great Spotted Woodpeckers galore & a few Nuthatches. Hamsters : awesome, I'll start researching their whereabouts. Thanks ! Squirrels : I took some nice shots of a Red yesterday. I could only find one (no Black variants were visible) but it...

    Red Squirrels in Vienna

I'm staying here for a few months and whilst on a stroll in my local park (Donaupark) was surprised to see both Red and Black variants of the Red Squirrel. Coming from the UK and living in China it was a delightful and surprising discovery because I hadn't even considered viewing the local...

Nepal - Black Lored or Yellow Cheeked Tit ?

Ha ha ! Going through all my photos from my Himalayan trip last year. I've hardly touched them until now - 'birded out' for a while :D Yep. I'm definitely edging towards a BLT.

Nepal - Black Lored or Yellow Cheeked Tit ?

From Nagarnot. The black lore and lack of a yellow patch over the bill seems to indicate Black Lored but this is a new bird for me so I'm not sure on the ID at all. Thanks ! Kevin

    Top Five Favourite Birds

I'll play. Only birds I've seen / photographed however. In no particular order and I reserve the right to update the list after every birding trip ! I'm extremely superficial - I love the most colourful or exotic. Snowy Owl - One of the hardiest of birds. Red-Faced Leocichia - don't you...

    Light-vented Bulbul

I would be very surprised if any chicks have hatched yet this year. Never mind fledged ! That's certainly the case for the large numbers that reside in my garden / housing compound :) It's very typical fledgling behaviour so I agree with Sangahyando that it's highly likely to be a female and...
