Yes, definitely go to Lake Apopka Restoration area. I live where I can make daily visits to Wakodahatchee Green Cay and Loxahatchee, but I will say I was extremely impressed with this place. I was there last November, so it's a bit early for the migrants I saw then. But when I went to the back...

Florida bird photography in mid April

Thank you! Those are wonderful shots. It may be a bit late for this but when I don't want to be bothered with people I go to Apoxee Park and the SWA trails. This is south of, and connected to, the Grassy Waters Preserve. Sometimes I'll see several cars in the parking lot but never encounter...

    Green Cay / Wakodahatchee wetlands

Yep-- I never thought of grey catbird but that's what it was. The position of the tail reminded me of a peeved mockingbird, and he had that darkish area on his head that seemed to give the illusion of a crest. He matches the id photos for sure. Thanks! I couldn't find any photos of the other...

    Green Cay / Wakodahatchee wetlands

Have you seen the bobcat lately? The other night a couple of photogs and I hung out looking for him. We've concluded it's just one photo being passed around hahahaha. There was a bird at GC I couldn't id. Thought it wa maybe a juvy little green, but the pics I see online don't jibe. It was...

    South Florida Birding

At Arthur Marshall---had an encounter with a gorgeous doe. We keep trying to find the bobcat and were told there are little ones....Darn snail kite in the westernmost area just before the levee, and I usually get there just before sunset, so even though he's close it's not too great for photos...

    South Florida Birding

Saw a male snail kite at A.R.M. this past Sunday. At first he was in the second to last impoundment on the south end if you walk west over the white pedestrian bridge. He was there a good 45 minutes but he was too far away for both my lens and my photography skills, so I just got some low...

Backyard nature show - jays vs hawk

Wow! It's so neat to see all the bird fights this time of year as well. A guy in my office has decoded some crow and grackle "caws" to mean "Hawk! Haul a**! Hawk! Haul a**!"

    Peregrines on Lake O

Thanks for the info. Been meaning to head out to the Lake and catch an airboat ride. This is more motivation ;) So cool you got to see the peregrine in action.

Have you noticed any Screech owls nesting at either place? I haven't been to either lately.

    South Florida Birding

Went to Ocean Ridge natural area Thursday night. It made up for all the failed Owl Prowls of last year. GHO flew by twice and then perched in a Red Mangrove. Heard several Screech Owl calls but didn't see any till I got back towards A1A. Played the call on my phone and then it seemed they...

    Green Cay / Wakodahatchee wetlands

Thanks Justin. I've been doing an experimental (haha) bike/trirail commute so I haven't hit these spots in months. But now that it's light out later i should be able to get over there ..would love to see the bobcats!!

    Burrowing Owls

I've seen them off the main road across from the cow pasture, so keep an eye out for those owl bumps ;)

    Burrowing Owls

I have seen them at Kissimmee Prairie which would be a reasonable drive I guess. It's just north of Okeechobee.

    Birding Campground? Florida!!

Just came across Palms and Pines in Felda. Sounds cool. Says it's a certified wildlife habitat. In any case they are on FB. And a tour of the place is featured at The Big O Birding festival.

    Snail Kite

The bus system in that area and for Central Florida in general is called Lynx. You can go to their site http://golynx.com for schedules and contact info. I don't know if it goes where you want to go but it's worth a call. The coverage is far more extensive than I thought it would be.

Anxious to hear how you like the Sony, Justin. I use a Lumix FZ35 at the moment but I can't get the hang of the teleconverter. ;( And I know it'll never give em the big lens quality on most shots, but i still think most of the problem is moi. Almost bought a D90 from eBay but held off. Always a...

    South Florida Birding

Not a peep (literally) from any birds near the high school that could be construed as gray kingbirds. In fact, nothing in that block the past week from anybody. A block or so away are the usual noisy mockers though. Nothing from them that sounds like a kingbird. Anyone going to the Big O bird...
