Two-Barred/Greenish Warbler? Penang Island, Malaysia 30.04.2021

Dear all, is this a Two-Barred/Greenish rather than Arctic Warbler? This warbler had features more in common with a Two-Barred/Greenish type warbler. The mandible is pale and unmarked, and the beak looks proportionately long and fine. The supercilium eye-stripe appears to reach all the way down...

Whistling ducks in south-east Nepal, lesser or fulvous?

Dear Michael, The most important feature to distinguish Lesser and Fulvous WDs is the colour of the uppertail covets and lower rump - chestnut-red in LWD and white in FWD. LWD also has a darker blackish-brown crown and hindneck than FWD overall, but it seems that lighting and individual...

My experience exactly, having both the ED78 and ED82 with the super bright 30x DS eyepieces stuck on them.

Immature Great or Christmas Island Frigatebird?

Dear all, Once again thank you very much for your feedback. I have managed to get my hands upon the article by David James - thanks to those who have sent it to me. What a difference it made! My opinion is that this is a juvenile Great Frigatebird. The key feature in distinguishing this...

Immature Great or Christmas Island Frigatebird?

Thanks Niels. The main confusion species for Great here in South-East Asia is the Christmas Island Frigatebird which is of similar size and build - we don't have Magnificents. As far as juveniles of this age are concerned, apparently the CIF has a hexagonal white belly patch, meaning that the...

Immature Great or Christmas Island Frigatebird?

Thanks Andy. You're right that it is rare record. In fact, it could be the first confirmed record from the Straits of Malacca in decades, so all the more important that it is confirmed to be a Great rather than Christmas Island. May i know the reasons why you think that it is a Great please...

Immature Great or Christmas Island Frigatebird?

Dear all, During a pelagic trip from a working anchovy purse seiner yesterday, I had the fortune of seeing my first two Frigatebirds ever. One was an obvious nearly-adult male Lesser Frigatebird. It was accompanied by this much larger bird which was about 30% larger. Opinions from my birding...

    Canon 500mm F4 lens - should I get one

I have the 400mm 5.6 and it's a lovely lens. Easily as sharp as the great white primes at a fraction of the cost and weight. Its limitation as all of us know is its lack of IS. I recently purchased a 100-400mm II to complement it. It's a great lens that is sharp wide open at 400mm. And that...

    Canon 500mm F4 lens - should I get one

If it's the 500mm f4.5 you're really interested in, Canon did use to make an autofocus EF model. But Canon doesn't service it anymore should it break down.

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

Why do you say it takes much effort to get sharp shots like that? Is the IS unpredictable? Or is there too much mirror vibrations?

    Full frame cameras

The 6D is great for hide work as well where the birds are usually close, and especially if the lighting conditions are poor such as hides in deep forest.

Tern species Sri Lanka February 2015

Looks like a White-Winged transitioning from winter into summer plumage as is commonplace for this time of the year. The black 'earmuffs' that are distinctive of this species are still visible, albeit slowly disappearing into an all black head and body.

    Canon T6i, T6s, 5DS, & 5DS R

I doubt if noise levels are any better. From what I've seen, Digic 6 processors emphasize speed rather than good ISO performance.

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

Have any of you noticed the noise levels of the 7D2 compared to cameras with Digic 5 processors especially the 70D? From what I've seen, the 7D2's Digic 6 seems to be optimized for speed rather than less noise.

    conservation of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker

Even if it is truly extinct, Fishcrow's efforts are not of naught either. His voice is crucial in the effort to save the habitat that doubtless still harbours numerous unique flora and fauna. Keep up the good work and all the best for your search of the Ivory-Billed woodpecker!

Site suggestions for Peninsular Malaysia in February

Genting Highlands on the way back to KL. Stay for a day or two and go to the Ulu Kali Radar Station (1750m ASL) at dawn. Some interesting upper montane species and a chance for rare migrants like a Siberian Rubythroat that was photographed there on 06.01.2015. Please note that many of Taman...

    7D11 vs 5D3 and 1DX

See Toh, if you're using the 400mm 5.6 lens that I think you are, the lack of IS would mean blurred photos unless you hit the /focal length rule.

    New Nikon 300mm f/4 VR

That's really too early to tell. I have the Canon 400mm 5.6 and CAs are minimal. Further, the new Nikon lens uses a Fresnel lens, which Canon has been using for the last 15 years under the Diffractive Optics or "DO" label. From my experience, DO lenses are inferior in terms of contrast and...
