    Understanding California migration

Thank you, Silverwolf. What I really don't understand are the migration patterns of the pelagic birds. I assume that is twice yearly too.

    Understanding California migration

Thanks though I've spent a lot of time on that chart. Will keep at it I guess. Please close this thread.

    Understanding California migration

We just moved here from Minneapolis where I fully understood migration. Who was coming through and when, how long birds could be expected to stick around, etc. Trying to understand how things work here in Los Angeles.

    Moved to L.A.questions.

Just moved to Hollywood. Can I list the two Mute Swans I saw yesterday at Hollywood Forever cemetery? How about the Parrots and Parakeets that I hear moving through the trees? And the Bulbuls? And I am not one of those "your list your rules" guys. Random thought: Amazing the number of...

    Los Angeles Pelagics?

What's the pelagic trip scene in L.A. County? Moving there and am looking for Auks and Shearwaters and really any pelagics. Thanks!

    S.s. sedentarius Allen's Hummingbird

Will the non-migratory S.s. sedentarius race of Allen's Hummingbird found in the Channel Islands and on Portugese Bend in Socal have any difference in appearance than the migratory race? I'm going to guess no. So is the only way to differentiate them simply by the time of year and place they...

    Should I give up birding?

The more I think about this the more this seems like an odd question. It's not like you are making a commitment to buy a house or RV. Buy a cheap pair of binoculars and go check out a field guide from your library. The innitial investment is minimal. Go for a few bird walks. You may like it...

Could this photo be 100% real?

Just a nice pic with very little depth of field.

    Should I give up birding?

There are punk rock birders. Just not here. perhaps I will start a local group. I also told the wife that she could hide my binoculars if I ever start dressing like a birder.

    Should I give up birding?

When I started I went on a few group bird walks where at 45 I was the youngest person there. I was also likely the only one who had the Ramones cranked on the car stereo on the way to the walk. I've decided I like my birding to be a soliarty experience or one that I share with my wife...

    Water Inside Bins

So they can be fixed? I was worried that there would be no way to get all the moisture out and that I would deal with internal fogging problems forever.

    Water Inside Bins

So it turns out my Bushnells are not as water proof as they claim. I left mine out in the rain and now one of the objective lenses is fogged on the inside. Is this fixable or is it impossible to get all the moisture out and they are just going to continue fogging up with any change in temp...

Largest Congregation of Birds You've Seen?

This weekend I saw several thousand ducks and geese of many different species at a local lake. Between the ones on the ground and those in the air it was an awe-inspiring sight. I have never seen that many birds in one location.

    My first bird sighting!

Congrats. I remember the first time I saw a Parasitic Jaeger and thinking that this was the first really cool, unusual for our area bird that I'd ever seen. In my mind that was when I became a birder.

    Snow Geese

eBird shows a few past sightings of Snow Geese in that area for this time of year. Not a lot though. http://ebird.org/ebird/map/snogoo?bmo=03&emo=05&byr=1900&eyr=2012&env.minX=-95.156&env.minY=41.708&env.maxX=-74.346&env.maxY=56.87&gp=true

No reason. Just never heard that term before. Now I know. Should have googled first.

    Bd eagle pics

Growing up in the seventies it was a big deal if we saw a Bald Eagle. Now there are a few places here where one can consistenly see multiple eagles perched in a tree. Yesterday I saw three soaring while a Crow mobbed them. A true conservation success story.

What bird species are really hard to tell apart?

If I were president I would require all gulls have unique plumage. None of this 1st year, 2nd year crap. Pick a unique color scheme and stick with it!

    Another Unknown - Central Illinois

I personally wouldn't feel confident enough with that that photo to count it towards any list I was keeping.
