    Understanding California migration

We just moved here from Minneapolis where I fully understood migration. Who was coming through and when, how long birds could be expected to stick around, etc. Trying to understand how things work here in Los Angeles.

    Moved to L.A.questions.

Just moved to Hollywood. Can I list the two Mute Swans I saw yesterday at Hollywood Forever cemetery? How about the Parrots and Parakeets that I hear moving through the trees? And the Bulbuls? And I am not one of those "your list your rules" guys. Random thought: Amazing the number of...

What's the pelagic trip scene in L.A. County? Moving there and am looking for Auks and Shearwaters and really any pelagics. Thanks!

    S.s. sedentarius Allen's Hummingbird

Will the non-migratory S.s. sedentarius race of Allen's Hummingbird found in the Channel Islands and on Portugese Bend in Socal have any difference in appearance than the migratory race? I'm going to guess no. So is the only way to differentiate them simply by the time of year and place they...

    Water Inside Bins

So it turns out my Bushnells are not as water proof as they claim. I left mine out in the rain and now one of the objective lenses is fogged on the inside. Is this fixable or is it impossible to get all the moisture out and they are just going to continue fogging up with any change in temp...

Largest Congregation of Birds You've Seen?

This weekend I saw several thousand ducks and geese of many different species at a local lake. Between the ones on the ground and those in the air it was an awe-inspiring sight. I have never seen that many birds in one location.

    Coopers vs. Sharp Shinned Hawk

There are lots of articles online showing how to tell the difference between these two hawks. None of the things to look for are particilarly easy to see though. Fellow birders: What do you find to be the easiest way to tell these two apart?

    Spotting scope learning curve

Just got my first scope and was surprised how difficult it is at first to find get a bird in frame. Any tips? Or is just something that takes time to learn?

    What's in a name?

I'm trying to figure out the different brand reputations and price points. For example, Leica and Swarovski are obviously on the high-end in quality and pricing. Barska and Alpen seem more towards the bottom. How about Konus, Kowa, and Vixen? Hope this makes sense. Just trying to get some...

    Birding Injuries?

It occurs to me that between having ones eyes constantly in the air and walking on uneven surfaces that there has to be a good amount of birding related injuries. I'm amazed I haven't walked off a cliff or broken an ankle yet. Any stories?

    Parasitic Jaeger in Wisconsin

Several of us got amazing views of a Parasitic Jaeger yesterday while birding in Superior, WI on Lake Superior. It's rare sight here in the first place but to see it harassing gulls at such a close distance was a treat. Best bird so far on my LL.

    Weekday Bird Walks???

I'm at a loss as to why so many organized bird walks are on weekdays. Is this really a hobby dominated by retired people? As someone who works typical 8-5 M-F hours it's frustrating to miss out on so many of these. Perhaps birding is doing itself no service by shutting out a large percentage...

    Hmmm

For such a good birding state, there is not much of an online birding community. I post on a email list serve but they limit your posts to one a day. I would love to see an active forum somewhere dedicated to birding in MN.

    Spotting Scopes?

Ok, another simple question. Spotting scopes seem a bit inconvenient to carry and setup. By the time you get one setup the bird is probably gone anyway. In what situations are they used? As a newbie do I need one?

Need ID help for Minnesota, USA

Wood Lake Nature Center in Richfield MN is a mixture of lakes, marshes and prairie surrounded by old growth decidious forest. Around 3:00 PM. In a medium sized tree, at a marsh/prairie transitional area at roughly the "1:00" position 30 feet off the ground we saw the following bird. Robin...

    Hello from Mpls, MN USA

Howdy. Just got into birding this spring. The wife and I moved into a place with a back yard and started feeding the birds. Living downtown in a major city your options are limited in what you are going to see in your backyard. So I decided that looking elsewhere to see other birds was what...

Thoughts on audio playback to attract birds

Thoughts on audio playback of calls to attract birds? Seems a bit like "cheating" though big listers seem to do this quite often? Opinions?

So, am I supposed to remember these bird calls?

:brains:I have some MP3s of bird calls that I've been listening to in an attempt to learn to recognize some. Some are distinctive. I will not forget what a white throated sparrow sounds like. A whole bunch though sound too familiar. I can't imagine ever learning to recognize that many. I...
