    Recommended Bird Guide(s) for Malaysia

A friend who is resident in Malaysia has asked if I can recommend a particular bird-guide book for his part of the world. He has used "A Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia" by Craig Robson to date, but finds some of the taxonomy slightly confusing. I would be grateful for any...

High Flying Flock (Berwick) UK c 15 Apr 2016

A colleague on another website recently posted this pic. High flying birds near the coast in the Berwick area "a few days ago". No further detail. My guess would be Cormorants, but a more informed opinion would be welcomed.

    Red-Throated Loon or? (Germany)

Confirmation please (or otherwise) on birds depicted in photos attached. Seen this morning on local (large) waterbody. Although views were distant, with scope on 30x my thoughts were probable RTL. Advice greatly appreciated. Mike Bramwell

    Gulls - Lake Constance

Seen today, on the lake (during a short holiday), in the company of 3 adult YL Gulls, and one 3cy Common Gull. Pics 1 to 3 all the of same bird - the leg colour appeared grey/pink. The bird in Pic 4 launched just as I pressed the shutter, but may prove useful for underside plumage. I suspect...

    Goose Hybrid Saarland Germany

Seen recently with ca 85 Canada Geese (sorry about pic quality). It may have been previously reported as Canada Goose x Greylag, though I have a suspicion there might be an element of-Bar Headed Goose (head and bill colouration); they are seen quite often in this region. Any other offers? Many...

    Just another tufty (Germany)?

Watched this bird for an hour in the rain this morning. Talked myself into thinking it was Aythya hybrid, but in better light later in the day I had to opt for Tufted Duck (imm female). Anyone like to confirm, please. Mike B

    Linnet or 'innit' Germany

Taken today on remote farmland track. I think that all pics are of Linnet ....... but ..... the streaking seems rather strong (particularly on the back). Any other offers? Many thanks Mike B

    Distant Duck (Aythya?) SW Germany

Seen very distant this morning - alone on large body of water. Tuft not evident (to me, at least), but back did look uniform dark. I was also struck by the length of neck showing. Any takers before I commit it to the "not known, possible Scaup or hybrid)" bin? MB

Female (Greater) Scaup or (most likely) hybrid, SW Germany

The bird shown in the photographs was found on my local patch this morning on a small (but isolated) pond. The lack of crest, strong white feathering at base of bill, well rounded head, evidence of white ear-coverts, and small black "nail" at tip of bill all suggest (Greater) Scaup .... but it...

Now That's What I Call Service!

Whatever the merits of one 'scope brand compared to another, you will need to go a long way to beat Swarovski after-sales service. My Parson Russel Terrier recently took umbrage at a front door caller and in his haste to sort the matter out upended my ATS 80HD which was propped up against the...

    Swarovski DCB-A Adaptor Advice Pse

Hi, I very recently purchased a DCB-A adaptor, and my first impression was "a very well engineered piece of kit". I assembled/attached the adaptor to my Swar HD80 (angled) 'scope without any difficulty, set up the camera and was quite astounded by the quality of screen image (Canon S95). I...

    Mallard Hybrid?

Greetings from Saarland Attached photo - Seen last week on the River Saar (in poor light). Unfortunatley, I got no better view during the 20 mins or so that I had the bird under observation, but I can say that it was some 20% larger than the Mallards in the vicinity. The venue is known for a...

Advice pse - Swarovski UCA Adaptor with Cannon EOS

Help please: I am about to venture into digiscoping, but need some advice. I have a Swarovski ATM 80HD 'scope and Cannon EOS 350HD camera. Ordinarily, the Swarovski UCA Adaptor would seem to be the right extra but the lens I use with the camera is a Cannon 35-80mm Power Zoom. The write-up for...

What's your New Year birding resolution?

No question for me: To track down and tick Water Rail, Gropper and Jack Snipe - all of which have eluded me to date in Saarland. Finding your own birds has distinctive rewards - no question, but I need some help with these bogey birds. The new birding information service that's come on-line in...

What was your best birding Christmas present this year?

An easy one for me - new Nikon SE CF 10 x 42 bins. Had a pair some years ago but I got "relieved" of them, and then went to Swarovski 10 x 42. After two cataract ops and subsequent laser treatment both sides, my vision wasn't all that good. The new Nikon bins have brought it all back - like the...

    Hello from Saarland

Hello, From ex Dorset/Hampshire birder now retired to Saarland Germany (just like much of Britain used to be 60 years go). Very much underwatched here, but I hope to give you an idea of general species locally and what the usual calender includes. Mike Bramwell:
