    2017 UK orchids

I'd go with Northern Marsh-orchid, given the shape of the lip and the location - Morfa Dyffryn, I assume? But, as you probably know, the Marsh orchids can be a nightmare to identify. Last year I was just down the coast from there at Ynyslas which has Northern Marsh, Northern Marsh var...

    2017 UK orchids

I was there on Thursday, Rafe. There were plants in all stages. Some just past their best, some peaking, and some still had buds on them. The Flys were looking good as well. Rog

    2016 UK Orchids

There was 1 Early Purple in flower and 1 in bud at the IOW site I visited yesterday. Just checked my records and last year I visited the site on 16th April and found lots of EPs in flower plus 1 Green-winged. No sign of Green-winged anywhere near flowering there at the moment. Rog

    2016 UK Orchids

It was Sean Cole (Ghostly Vision) who posted the photos on Twitter. If you check his latest post: https://twitter.com/ukorchids it looks like the Sawfly is past its best and not worth seeking out. Durlston Country Park is saying today that they have a few Early Spiders in bud. Happy...

    2015 UK Orchids

Yes, I was shown it the day after it was found. It's quite near the last plant that turned up in 2013, and in line of sight of the Purbeck colonies about 16 miles away as the seed flies. Rog

    Wildflower Id Please

Don't know what the first one is, but the second one is Red Campion (Silene Dioica), third is Sainfoin (Onobrychis vicifolia), fourth is Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) and I think the last one is Musk Mallow (Malva moschata). Rog

    2015 UK Orchids

I had a look yesterday for Green-winged rosettes at a couple of sites, but none showing yet. I was pleased to find some Bee orchid rosettes at a site where the plants were strimmed last year before they had a chance to flower. Rog

    2014 UK Orchids

We have a small colony of Marsh Fragrants on the Isle of Wight on north facing chalk downland which are just starting to flower. They reappeared last year after an absence of 28 years and seem to be hanging on this year although in smaller numbers - 13 plants last year and 5 this. Rog

Quite agree Sean, a truly outstanding book. I was lucky enough to receive a copy as a Christmas present. Definitely a coffee table book though, NOT a field guide! Rog

    2014 UK Orchids

It occurs at a site on the Isle of Wight where it often outnumbers ordinary Bees. There are usually several var. belgarums in the colony (although none appeared this year) and occasionally a few var. chlorantha, but I haven't seen any for a few years now. (It's a very sensitive site so please...

    2014 UK Orchids

On the Isle of Wight Marsh Fragrant grows on a north facing chalk downland site several hundred feet above sea level, and in Harrap (Orchids of Britain and Ireland) it states: "Occasionally occurs on chalk grassland on north-facing slopes, as at Ditchling Beacon and Heyshott Down in Sussex."
