Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

This is an old pic taken on Portra 400 color film several years ago. Lockheed Electra L-12, the sound of its radials preceding its appearance by at least a full one minute. Taken at my favorite former patch at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Bounded by the terminal...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Here, or up in the city, air traffic controllers call that a "viking departure" Number of times I've been lucky enough to have seen F-15's at night, turn on full afterburners, stand straight up, and go vertical. They're vectored out of the terminal control area (TCA) quickly as possible to...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Those old birds still get around. I recognize "Witchcraft" the B-24J as the same bird below. B-17 on its baseleg, in the background. Just hearing the sound of those radials thumping along, and closing the eyes, invokes history I didn't see otherwise.

F-15 variants will be around for awhile yet. Still come down here from the city, during flight test.

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

I still have my last flying model. The empennage torn up and broken. 3 meter balsa and graphite glider. After 80 hours building it, my first time out with it and trying to trim the controls, I wingover'd' into the ground....hard. Have it packed away, to maybe fix one of these days Lockheed 12...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

I've enjoyed this thread since its beginning. Many of us sharing the passion of what flies, regardless of how. Fabulous photographs have been contributed, along with the thoughts of good people. Cheers! Below, were both taken at my former favorite patch, when I lived in the area. Confluence of...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

B-25 flew over as I was driving out from the local patch, this afternoon. Kept at Smartt field, part of a commemorative collection. Dressed as a ground attack version, although it may be an later alteration.

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

This is part of a living history display that travels around the US, puts on a show. Had a B-25 there also, which I missed coming in. B-17 is on its base leg in the background. B-24, in foreground. Was about 10 meters behind both, shooting video, pilots full throttled starboard engines to turn...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

See the chap below occasionally, out over the Mississippi. He's obliged by waving a few times. On film, as that is, about as fast as I can go now days, to get a shot. Once the White Pelicans start coming down in numbers, believe he grounds himself.

Close enough to Whiteman to see B2's fairly often. Then there's an older, slower, wingless kind of flight. Controllers at regional ports deciding to have them drone on for an hour until traffic slows and they can bring them down, spoiled what was a good day for Upland Sandpiper.

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

With a little practice, the difference in sound of Rolls Royce, General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, and other jet engines can be heard, especially the Doppler shift as they pass by. Of course, radial engines will require the eye. But otherwise, one can stay glued to the hawks, and listen to the...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Have encountered, and been encountered by Red-Tailed hawks a few times, while soaring. We're taught early on to keep eye out for buteos, vultures, eagles, etc., thermaling underneath a developing (flat bottomed) cumulous cloud. One experience was in controlled airspace, a TCA (terminal control...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Some beautiful photographs of historic aircraft by others above. Love to have the opportunity to hear if there is difference in sound of the Rolls Merlin, vs. Packard licensed Merlin. Below is again from the regular patch, at the confluence of the Mississippi & Missouri rivers. The first, a...

Just read the VC-10 had been retired, in September. Banked "Lanc" that John has there is magnificent! Thoughts of MJB, has myself remembering back, recollecting some conversations of co-workers, mentors, my dad and uncle. Can we help being drawn to mechanical apparitions, when the feathered...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Did a double take when this thing flew by, at the local patch it was sharing airspace with Trumpeter swans. Was headed to Scott AFB, few miles off it's nose

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Do flying fish count?.... Up powered Boeing B-377-SG, has 4 Pratt & Whitney T-34-P turbos, instead original Allisons. Didnt fly here in daylight, waited until calm night. Were shy about gawking and roadway traffic problems when it was getting airborne
