Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I've heard of wearing a red cap, but I also wonder what the other birds will think of a giant red blob visibly moving down the trail?

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Here's a story to illustrate why I've been happy with my umbrella. Recently in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where the temps tend to be about 90 degrees F with 80%-90% humidity, I was hiking in the jungle with my guides at o'dark thirty. It started to rain, a BIG rain. I popped open my umbrella and...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Sorry to give you contradicting information but since I first posted the question I have visited Indonesia, Ecuador and Panama. As has been mentioned, you will probably already be wet from sweat BUT I found that an umbrella is definitely the way to go IF you are in the lowland tropics. I have a...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I always have multiple lens cloths with me when I travel and they're in multiple small plastic baggies. I've never run out.

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Hmm, I actually haven’t looked into pants. I’ve got a collection of nylon hiking pants. You just gave me more work to do!😆

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

FYI, I DID order the camo umbrella hat. The band was uncomfortable and the umbrella was only large enough to protect your head, not the rest of your body. I sent the umbrella back.

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

If you look higher in this thread, you'll see the recommendation of the Huriia umbrella holder and the Montbell umbrella. I bought both. I tried them on in my living room and it appears as though the combo will work although I will probably get a bit wet as the umbrella is just a bit smaller...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Great story and info, Bryan. I've purchased a camo-patterned umbrella with a hands-free harness that is less than optimal but just might work well enough to allow me to photograph while staying dry.

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I also take photos whenever possible, so this should be fun! Ordered both an umbrella in a camo color and a hands-free bracket to put it in. Neither have arrived yet. Fingers are crossed that this will work. Don't know if I mentioned this but I'm birding 23 days in Sulawesi and Halmahera. I'm...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Thanks, and I've come to almost the same conclusion. I'll pack a rain jacket, rain pants and I'm going to look into suitable umbrellas. Do you carry your umbrella in your hand or do you have a hands-free attachment?

"Great" in terms of big, huge, MONSTROUS, but certainly not "great" in terms of "yeah, I'd do THAT again if I could".:ROFLMAO:

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I just returned from a trip to Nepal and India. I suffered 6 weeks of GI problems, a constant very painful knee from trekking on thousands of stone steps, an upper respiratory infection that lasted for almost 2 months (tough to stay quiet while birding and hacking and coughing), and I was...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Thanks for your input, Temmie. I DO try to do my travel birding during the dry season or the shoulder of the wet season but that doesn't mean that when I'm hiking quite a distance from a car or lodge I won't find myself in a downpour. In Nepal, recently, we had intermittent rain, sometimes quite...

    Makes sense. Thanks!

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

An item in my birding equipment repertoire is a Rocket Air Blaster, which a guide I'd hired in Costa Rica used. This will get most of the water droplets off of your glass and then you can use your cleaning cloth to absorb what is left...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

It would be another arrow in my quiver. In India we were walking along trails where there was plenty of room for an umbrella. I believe, but am not certain, that when affixed to a vest the umbrella moves backwards when a birder bends a bit at the waist to look up. Definitely would also have the...

Great, thanks! This is what I couldn't find.

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

In India, recently, I met some Europeans who had black, hands-free umbrellas that were held in place by straps on their vest. I thought it would be easy to find these on line, but no luck so far. Heading to Indonesia for 2 months so I figure I should figure out the best way to handle birding in...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

So this comes to Question #2. I don't want to hold an umbrella and I can't find a hands-free umbrella that is not silver, which would alarm birds. Any suggestions there?

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

For birding in hot, humid and wet countries, would you suggest wearing a poncho, perhaps with gaiters, or rain jacket and pants. I carry binocs and a bridge camera around my neck.
