Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

yes, China was much more expensive than I had anticipated! Partly it is because often travelling alone works out more expensive nowadays (everything is priced for groups), partly because wildlife stuff often costs more than regular backpacker stuff (if it's "eco" the price goes up!), but mostly...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

hi, no I went to the Chengdu Zoo but that was the only captive collection I saw there. The impression I got of the panda facility in Chengdu (as opposed to the one at Bifengxia, somewhat outside Chengdu) is that it is just a tourist outlet for cuddling pandas. The following are the collections...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

oh wow I never noticed the rating average. Being a maths wizard I took some time and worked out on my fingers that an average rating of five stars on a five star system means all 32 votes were five-star votes. I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to top that for the next trip.... I'm going to...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

hard to say...but this may answer it in some way: REMEMBRANCES OF TIMES PAST: None of this is exhaustive. It is simply the things which stick in my head. COUNTRY HIGHLIGHTS: Mongolia: the best of all that I visited on this trip. I have always wanted to go there, but never thought I would...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

I thought it might be interesting for some people to see some stats for the trip (money spent, number of countries, etc). This is up to the sixteenth of May, the end of the Asia trip, when I flew to Melbourne, Australia. *10 countries (not counting Hong Kong because I was just in the airport...

I shall look forward to your Borneo reports! I'll be in Melbourne for about a month (house-sitting for part of it, so free accommodation for three weeks yay). Hoping to find a job there somewhere in that time, otherwise it's back to NZ.

ooh, I just found a book on the shelf here at Travellers Planet in Melaka called "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To Japan"! That sounds promising! For anyone wondering about tickling slow lorises: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m2Nn43QJA4

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

I flew from Kota Kinabalu early morning back to Kuala Lumpur. The Air Asia girl at the check-in counter was named Monaliza. The plane landed in KL at the brand new KLIA2 terminal. The old Air Asia terminal (LCCT) was easy to navigate around – the new one is enormous! It is quite confusing for...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

I arrived back in Kota Kinabalu in the early afternoon and immediately after checking back into Lucy's Homestay I headed off to look for parrots. The particular parrot I wanted to see is called the blue-naped parrot. It is in a genus called Tanygnathus which basically means “big beak”. One of...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

yes I was obviously very pleased with the loris, and never expected a tarsier to land at my feet (literally!). Unfortunately I still haven't seen a Kinabalu squirrel -- three times on Mt. Kinabalu and narry a one sighted! This trip I also missed the Whitehead's pigmy squirrel on Mt. Kinabalu...

thanks. Unfortunately no Java... or anywhere else. The trip actually is over now. In two days I leave Asia :-C Back to the real world, whatever that is.

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

All the major sites in Sabah are connected by an excellent bus network. In 2009 I went Kota Kinabalu to Mt. Kinabalu to Lahad Datu (for Danum Valley) to the Kinabatangan to Sepilok to Poring to Mt. Kinabalu again and back to Kota Kinabalu (and fitted the Crocker Range in there as well somehow, I...

well that explain recycling rubbish paintings, but not hiring rubbish artists in the first place! Or maybe it does.

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

I (and probably everyone) always find it surprising how often field guides are rubbish. Sometimes you are reduced to identifying birds through an elimination process rather than by the paintings actually looking like the bird.

oh wow, that is exactly what it was! How come the picture in the book does not look like it?! I Google Imaged "white-browed shortwing female Kinabalu" and got some photos, such as the ones on here which look exactly like what I saw: http://sinooorita.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html Thanks :t:

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

Leaving Peninsular Malaysia for Sabah I was allowed to leave my batteries in my check-in luggage, contrary to other Air Asia flights, but I had to take off my belt to go through the checkpoint. There are two airports for Kuala Lumpur, one is the KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and the...

I'm guessing glossy swiftlets (those are what I am seeing, and I'm just down the road :p), but I remember there were lots of Asian house swifts round KK as well last time.

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

I did one guided night walk at Sepilok in 2009 but it had been raining heavily and nothing but frogs were out. That's where I saw red giant flying squirrels though. The other nights I did my own thing at the RDC and saw red giant and black giant flying squirrels, lots of frogs etc, but no loris...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

This part of the trip is called “Back In Borneo, Baby!”. Otherwise known as “Good God Will This Trip Never End?!”. Or to MKinHK as “Um, Are You Following Me?” I have been to Borneo before, back in 2009 for seven weeks. I wasn't going to go back this year but some cheapish flights came up so I...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

Last time I was in Melaka, back in 2011, I arrived at the main bus station (Melaka Sentral) and there was a guy there asking everybody on the buses if they wanted to stay at his guesthouse, Le Village. I stayed there, it was good and cheap (20 Ringgitts for a room). However I understand it has...

Chlidonias Goes To Asia, part three: 2013

I had been warned off visiting S.E.A. on a weekend!! It is expensive (as pubic aquariums always are because of costs); if you pay at the counter it is Sg$38, but booking online Sg$33 -- they gave me a voucher for Sg$10 off my next visit too, not that I can use it. There are all sorts of extras...
