    Although Nikon state that certain tc's are only suitable with certain lenses they do so to cover themselves against poor performance compared to other combinations.Both the 1.7 and 2.0mk 111 will af on an f4 lens depending possibly on which body you use. My D300s would AF , albeit slowly...

    No problem Steve, as I said,I have only tried them on a 500mmf4 ,far better someone who has tried the300 !

    The Mk111 gives good IQ with the 500mm f4,( I have no experience of the 300mm f4). AF is sometimes slow, certainly not good for BIF I wouldn't think but I found the performance better on the 2.0 TC Mk111 than the 1.7 TC Mk11. The 1.4 will give both good IQ and decent AF performance.
