    Thanks for your comments Stuart and TWM. As you can see from the additional pictures, the bird is in fact just a Meadow. The initial photo was not put there to trick anyone, just to show how variable birds can be, even within species with no races or clinal variation. The pink on the breast...

    On the subject of the identifiability of spinoletta v's littoralis, I sit on a local rarities committee in the Midlands, where the picture might superficially be clearer.     On the original photo, the leg colour is a distinctively bright orangey pink, though the bright sunlight may be enhancing this. The breast also has a clearly distinct pale pinkish to it. Just goes to show how tricky these are.... Any more comments from others would be welcomed, as this bird...

    Very interesting post, Darrell, and also very interesting pics. The left hand one looks a classic littoralis, the right hand one looks a classic petrosus. Any comments now Chris on whether you think littoralis can be id'd in wp? Sean
