    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Very few damsels left on patch now so I was surprised to see a late Red-eyed Damselfly (I think my latest ever?) among the comparatively few Small Red-eyeds that are still around. Excited about the news of a Willow Emerald Damselfly not too far from patch (in Yate) yesterday, so surely not long...

I love it! And many of the finding skills and ID challenge skills learned from birding are transferable. A bit weird though in that it does probably decrease the chance of finding a good bird because your eyes are focussing generally closer. You still hear stuff, but a Black Kite sailing...

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Willow Emerald Damsel (first for Avon) has been found at same site on Severnside that has recently had Red-veined Darters and Lesser Emperor!

I'm so gagging for one on my patch though! And Lesser Emperor. Both now present only a few km away, and both would be patch ticks....

...and at least one male Small Red-eyed seen today at same site. Hugely outnumbered by Red-eyed today, but give it a month or so and, if things are like they were last year, SRED will be the most numerous damselfly at the site.

I'm sure of the ID though I didn't get a pic I'm afraid. It was a male, had red eyes and the right pattern of blue on the terminal abdominal segments and was dwarfed appreciably by interacting male Common Blues. We've got heaps of Red-eyed on site this year (more than ever) and I've been...

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

When I went about 3 years ago, Ben Eighe visitor's center was the most reliable spot, and they were easy to find (along with Northern Emerald) about 10mins walk from the visitor's centre, if you walk along the trail that parallels the road back in a (roughly) southeastward direction. From...

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly found on patch in Bristol today (same site as we had them in 2021). 11 spp of Odonata identified on patch today, plus a frustrating flyby of an emperor sp, possibly Vagrant Emperor.

Where's your local area Owene, if you don't mind me asking?

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

We get them in decent numbers in my local pond, and some stretches of the river Avon between Bristol and Bath have lots of them.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2023

Late start to dragon season at my local pond in Bristol, but a lunchtime visit today produced four damsel spp: 1 White-legged, 3 Azure, 4 Large Red, and several Blue-tailed.
