    SX40 Super Zoom

I've had varying success with mine - sometimes the results at max zoom have been excellent, even when hand held. At other times, I've noticed weird artefacts which I guess are from sharpening in the camera, and I'm unsure as to what controls this, as I rarely vary the ISO from the 200 to 400 range.

    SX40 Super Zoom

Andy, that's an excellent set - puts my shots to shame. And, many thanks for your "recipe" - it looks as though you understand what's going on "under the hood" of these Super Zooms much better than I do.

    SX40 Super Zoom

I may be wrong about this, but my gut feeling is that the exposure metering on my SX40 is more reliable than on my Eos DSLRs, and I guess the reason is that exposure is measured by the same sensor as does the image capturing. I'd be interested in hearing other people's views.

    SX40 Super Zoom

Answers: 1. Lens hood isn't included. My lens came fitted with some type of bayonet adapter which allowed me to fit a standard 58mm screw-in filter. (I've seen criticism of this feature on the web.) 2. Battery charger is included, and it's different to all my other Canon chargers. 3. If you...

    SX40 Super Zoom

My SX40, at its default settings, gives me 4:3 aspect ratio jpegs at between 2.3 and 4.35MB. I normally have the ISO set in the range 200 to 800. HTH

    SX40 Super Zoom

Having only had my SX40 for a few weeks, I'm not sure if I count as "experienced", but anyway, two days ago I was surveying the Manor Farm site in Milton Keynes which following some gravel extraction, is now being planted, and I got this shot of a heron. I've attached a full frame shot, as...

    SX40 Super Zoom

I used the SX40 HS exclusively for around a week both on a tripod and hand held, and have now got round to doing some comparisons with my normal birding gear, a 50D attached to an EF 500 F4L IS. Quite a difference in size! There's simply no way that I would have been comfortable carting my...

    SX40 Super Zoom

And it was that QVC broadcast that grabbed my attention when they compared the max (apparent) zoom of the SX40 with Canon's current longest EF lens, i.e. an EF 800 F5.6L. My longest EF lens is the EF 500 F4L IS which I normally use on a 1D III or on a 50D, and supported by a heavy tripod and...
