The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

I like the lift straps. I don't mind the old style pivot rainguards the SLCs and ELs had, but only once they've loosened off a bit. The problem with the Habicht lozenge shaped one is it only works properly for me at the wrong IPD position - it's just a little too short.

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

I paid under £1000 for a fully boxed as new pair of the EL 8x32s from a UK store about a year ago, so it is/was possible.

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

Interesting - I thought the 40mm SFLs were very good, but a noticeable step down from SFs, other than in colour cast.

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

I don't always agree with Dennis, but in this case he's probably right. It's unlikely that Zeiss will have produced a binocular that optically performs better than SF/EL level for less than they sell SFs...

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

I've tried the 10x32 NLs and yes they're excellent, but my EL 8x32 and 10x32 were less than half the price of the NL equivalents and for me the extra FoV didn't warrant double the cost - yes optically the NLs are marginally better, but it took significant effort to spot any difference beyond...

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

The only time I find a wider FoV useful is in counting flocks of fast moving birds, but that's possibly because the vast majority of my birding is done in a wide open landscape so it tends to be focusing in on something you can see with the naked eye (even better FoV ;-)). I can imagine if...

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

Yes - I still don't really understand Swarovski's decision to drop the EL 8x32s, other than the performance being good enough to take sales from the NLs there doesn't seem much logic to it The ELs are on a par with the SFs (better edge performance, better eyecups, more neutral, slightly narrower...

The new ZEISS SFL 30 binoculars

UK prices seem to be about £1300 so £350 more than the CL 8x30s and £350 less than the EL 8.5x42s (I think the EL 8x32s were about £100 less than the 8.5x42s, but of course they're now only available used).
