The shutter speed thing is only applicable if you hand hold or do not have good support - I regularly shoot 600mm at around 1/250 sec or lower and still get very sharp shots, even when cropped heavily BUT I am using a good quality tripod and gimbal head. -

Spot AF reduces the size of a normal focus point.The benefit of Spot AF is its ability to let you pin-point focus upon a tiny area of a scene. -

Good question Andreas, from what I have read Cfn III-3 is best on position 1 if you are using multi points like zone AF but if you are using point expansion then position 0 is probably best. I have left mine on position 0 and it works fine but I do not use zone AF. I too,would be interested in... -

John-Henry, accurate exposure is what it is all about IMO - under exposure that is pushed in processing would look terrible, especially in the shadow areas. On this shot the exposure was just about right but I would have preferred it to have been a 1/3 of a stop more to the right even if the... -

Just found out what happened to the Beak Steve - when I ran the aggressive BG noise reduction I never masked out the beak so it was noise reduced to oblivion LOL. I have just done a very rough and ready re process to show that it did indeed have a beak. -

I have been looking at that myself Steve - it is on the RAW shot but only just visible as it blends in with the BG at that point. I guess something in the processing has made it disappear as the BG is darker on the finished shot. Not really that bothered as it is only a record/test shot at the... -

The strange thing is Pete that this is the only window in the house that more or less never gets cleaned because of its position. I had the glazing unit changed a couple of years ago and I am sure it is that self cleaning glass that you can get nowadays - goodness knows how it works but it does. -

Nothing more than I would normally do at ISO 800 JH. A very light reduction over the bird followed by a heavy reduction over just the BG (I use NN plugin in CS4) -

In my case I was already to send my camera back after a couple of days and a friend encouraged me to give it a bit longer, after a week I was delighted with the camera. I am not saying that you have not got a 'lemon' but people encouraging others to make sure it is not user error before... -

Hi Ron, re the snow I used the shadows/highlight tool to dampen down the highlights (which was the snow of course) and recover the max amount of detail. I also made sure when metering that I did not completely blow the snow. -

Thanks Phil, everything I have read about shooting through windows say that you should be square on to the glass but I have found this not to be the case - I have many shots from my computer desk which is about 30 degrees to the window and they are better than being square on in my experience... -

Like most folk when they get a new toy, I could not wait to try out my 7D. The first day out was crap light and I was snapping birds from a distance I would not normally shoot at - when I got home and looked at the shots I was bitterly disappointed and thought about returning the Camera right... -

Here is a better example of slow tracking sensitivity at work from yesterdays shoot. The focus point is clearly over the shore/water line some 10 metres behind the bird but the bird is still sharply in focus because the slow tracking has not yet acquired focus. With the 40D it would have latched... -

To my mind the biggest advantage to BIF compared with other non 1 series cameras is the ability to be able to set a slow tracking sensitivity speed. Here is a good example of a shot I took yesterday. These were taken with a 2x tc PLUS a 1.4x tc stacked, please read the post. - just the 2x tc gives far better images than this. My post was all about the 7D's AF performance when out of spec (e.g. f8) it had nothing to do with the 300/2.8 or any other lens. It should be of interest to anyone... -

There was some nice light today so I tried the 7D AF sytem with stacked 2x tc and 1.4x tc on my 300/2.8 (effectively f8 but the camera only sees the 2x tc so attempts to AF). The results were pretty good, on birds with high contrast like Oystercatcher and shellduck the AF was fast (centre... -

Some nice shots there Tim, especially the bluetit. I agree with you on two counts, camera shake and DOF a) You need a steady platform or higher shutter speed to get sharp shots (I already use a tripod most of the time so no real problem) b) I am using a 2x tc with my 300/2.8 most of the time...
