    ...Suggest it'd be worth checking eye colour across a range of photos/in the field. All of the Chinese egrets posted here have markedly paler eyes than the reef egrets. The OP bird that sparked this discussion also has, and is (partly for this reason) I guess Chinese egret for me.

    Note that I've never seen Chinese egret, but am I right in thinking that there's a consistent difference in iris color? The reef egret seems to have a slightly more orange eye against the pale of Chinese..?
