Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I didn't get the chance to get to know Ken well but on the occasion I did meet him he was, as you said, a true gent. I'm glad that you noticed that it would have been his birthday today. Fiona

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I had a very pleasant walk up Mither Tap this morning. Bit chilly up at the top with snow flurries but of course it is only mid May. Heard my first cuckoo of the year and had 23 species in total. Highlights were Red Squirrel and Redstart.

Hi Paul Thanks for that. It has to be Bennachie for me... I have memories of making OH walk for miles there years ago, by accident <snigger>. Meeting up with the tame caper would be a bonus but it's certainly the sort of territory that I like and I'm happy with the usual species. I'm glad...

I have to drop my OH off in Inverurie at 6am tomorrow (15th May). I also want to take my camera to Jessops in Inverurie which won't open until 9am so I have approx 3 hours birding time. I'm happy doing my own thing in any new area but if anyone has any tips for particular areas in the vicinity...

Thanks for passing on the info for me Joseph. Yes it is it's third winter as far as I know. Being such an under watched area it's perfectly possible that it has been missed in the past previously. Excellent about the Waxwings. If I don't see any this year I am going to be very disappointed...

Well I still haven't managed to find any cresties in Dufftown. I've been rather tied to home the last couple of years but I spent a lot of time looking previously. I put up a feeder fairly close to home a couple of days ago in an area that I thought could be a possible spot for them... not...

Lucky you saw it yesterday. If the Cabrach road isn't closed already, I'm sure it soon will be as the snow is drifting badly. At least you got a record shot, mine wasn't much better lol.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough, I've no idea if the Shrike is still there or not! It was so foggy I could barely see a thing.

I had to go to Elgin this morning and I was keeping an eye out and yet again I saw a Hooded Crow in the same place. Did you stop where there is a small farm on the left hand side? That is where I always spot them, between the farm on the left and a farm a bit further on on the right. Stupidly...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I really enjoyed reading your blog Joseph. In fact I shall have to read some of the earlier accounts! I had to go to Banchory today, via Elgin on the way to drop a car off, but came back via the Shrike. Bit of a waste of time as I could only just see the nearest willow bush that it perched on...

I really don't know, only that it was far too much. :-O

You're in luck. I'd deleted the photos I took that day as even though the Shrike was closer, it was facing more front on and I prefered the earlier photo as it showed the markings better. However I hadn't emptied my trash can so I was able to retrieve it. Here it is.

Of course you can use the photo Joseph. Can you copy it off here or do I need to e-mail it to you? I'm really pleased you liked the area so much. You can see why it takes quite a lot to get me to the coast lol. Fiona

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I promised Joseph a couple of pics of what the area where the Shrike is looked like in the snow. The first photo is the forest we walked in and the second is the road we drove along looking for other birds. They were taken on the 22nd Feb and a couple of days later we had another big dump of...

Excellent, I'm so glad you saw the Shrike. Shame about the weather today, it did get better this afternoon. I wish I'd known you didn't go for the Black Redstart, even though I was busy at home you would have been very welcome to pop in for a cuppa. I'll have to hope that another interesting...

I bet it's the place I see them, you've beaten me with 3 though as the most I've seen there is only 2. Got one knocking around close to home but other than that and the ones on the Elgin road, I very rarely see them.

What a shame you didn't see the King Eider but sounds like you had a good day anyway. Just wondered if you saw the Hooded Crow a couple of miles out of Dufftown on the Elgin road? I keep seeing one there. Fiona
  20. Tree Sparrow

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Good luck Ken, hope you get to see both. Wish I had the time to pop down to see you there but after going two days I really must catch up with work. Fiona

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

You're very welcome Joseph. I really enjoyed myself too. It was lovely to see you and your Dad again and to meet Gus and Alex. It seemed quite odd to have so many people in the area as it's normally so quiet lol. Fiona

See you tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's still there. Fi
  23. Tree Sparrow

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Just to make it clear, I wasn't the finder of the bird, someone else did the hardwork, I don't know who but I'm very grateful to them. I was just very pleased to know it had been spotted there so that I could go and see it. I'm meeting up with Joseph and his Dad tomorrow morning so fingers...
  24. Tree Sparrow

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I was watching every car that came along, looking to see if you were in it. It's a fairly quiet road lol. I'm useless at grid references but I thought they were a bit out, which is why I walked up the road a bit. But the carpark area is the best place to see it from. Will you be coming from...
  25. Tree Sparrow

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Did you go? I did and amazingly I did see it. Got there and parked in the car park and checked out all the bushes but didn't see it so wandered up the road for an hour or so, lots of siskin, goldfinch, crossbill, thrushes, skylark etc. Wandered down into a little fenced off nature bit and...
