    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

If I was to get really serious about scoping from a car (which I am not) then I would empty the back seat of backpacks, walking poles, camera gear and waterproofs and put them all in the boot/trunk and sit in the back, preferably behind the front passenger's seat, having pulled this seat as far...

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Hi Henning It wasn't the aiming that was the problem although that was a little tricky at first, its just that the extent of the traverse available is limited by needing to get your head alongside the angled EP in the limited space of a car window. Although this limits where you can point the...

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

This is dead right Hermann. I have a Meopta S2 Angled on test at the moment and it is definitely more awkward swivelling it around to use the angled eyepiece 'sideways'. Its awkward but by no means impossible. Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

David I am not now sure if the objective will turn out to be all that complex. Light transmission of 88% doesn't suggest a massive increase in glass/air boundaries. Lee

Thanks Ed I know he will be very interested in those references. Clearly 'Ed' stands for 'educated' . Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Henning Herr Dobler agrees that a reflex sight could be useful with some scopes in some circumstances. He would not recommend one with Harpia as the low magnification and wide field of view makes target acquisition quite easy. We can imply from this that he considers a reflex sight would be...

And Henning, it would be cheaper to incorporate the base plate for the attachment of the sight or at least the Picatinny rail or similar, to the tripod ring. Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Henning The rifle sights I referred to are just two ridges with a groove between, moulded onto the sun shade. To attach a reflex sight would need something like a short Picatinny rail and I can see that creating a flat surface for this would be an added cost to the optical tube. And the sight...

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Henning If you rotate the Harpia within its tripod ring, set on a window clamp, you can use it OK within a vehicle. The video referred to earlier in this thread illustrates this technique. Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Hi Saggi Good to hear your voice again. Over here in the UK I can't remember the last time I saw a straight scope. Angled means group viewing is much easier. Taller folks have to bend a bit lower is all. As for you, why don't you try this? Rotate the Harpia in its tripod ring so that its...

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

The view was certainly comfortable through the pre-production prototypes but I am keeping my powder dry until I have looked through a genuine full production off-the-shelf unit. It sounds terrific but lets wait and see........ Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

It is still a substantial investment for most people. With products like this there are different factors that will influence pricing: cost plus profit, competitor's price levels, and the assortment of capabilities your product posseses and your market's willingness to pay extra for them. Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Thanks for your kind words, Henry, I put my back into this one. Dobler is a birder through and through and is only interested in practical benefits for birders. We are all waiting for the availabiliity of production Harpias to find out how it well it works. Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

Herr Dobler mentioned that Harpia is expected to begin arriving in the shops in September so I would imagine units for review will be made available around the same time. Lee

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

David Thanks for your kind words. We don't know how many lenses Harpia has because it is their policy at this point not to reveal this anywhere worldwide. There are rumours of course but lets wait for the release of the product. I get the feeling that there will be more flexibility about this...

    Interview with Harpia Team Leader

When Zeiss announced the forthcoming Harpia spotting scope last year and published the specifications, it triggered much speculation and discussion on Bird Forum about the design of the scope and how it functions. I decided to try to cut through the speculation and find out the facts from the...
