    Nah, I'm not dead set on it. I'll defer to those who regularly see these birds in their neck of the woods. I've only seen each once, and, after reading through this thread, I'm not sure I got either of 'em right now! :eek!: ;)

    Also, note the shape of the back of the head. The Downy has a more angular shape, whereas the Hairy is more rounded (similar to comparing a Lesser Scaup with a Greater).

    Here is a side by side illustration. (well, top and bottom to be pedantic) I don't know, I'm thinking Downy after looking at those drawings, even after allowing for the angle of the head.
