    Mallorca 2021

Another year without the delights of Mallorca so, before I sign off for Christmas may I wish all on here a Happy Christmas and hopefully a bird-filled New Year -- and thanks for keeping us up-to-date. "I'll be back!" Martin

Hi Stew Sorry, that should have read Sphodromantis viridis. That's probably from: Sobre la presencia de Sphodromantis viridis (Forskal, 1775) (Dictyoptera, Mantoidea) a Mallorca. Presence of Sphodromantis viridis (Forskal, 1775) (Dictyoptera, Mantoidea) in Mallorca by Canyelles, Xavier and...

Hi Phil - I think you are right. It does look like a mantis egg case (or ootheca), probably of Sphodromantis viridis. Martin

Hi Stew, this is Sphrodomantis viridis, otherwise known as the Giant African Mantis - but it is present in Mallorca. I sometimes get them at my light traps. Martin

The Birds of the Iberian Peninsula (2015) lists six for mainland Spain (none for the Balearics) but says that records are increasing in western Europe. Martin

There's a useful .pdf guide to the snakes of the Balearic Islands but according to my notes, there may be one or two additions. It's available as a download here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/328719055_Les_serps_de_les_Illes_Balears_Manual_d%27identificacio It's caught a gecko...

Just a quote from the 2015 Bird Report (the last one I have as, unfortunately, I've not been to the island since 2016): White-cheecked Pintail Anas bahamensis Neotropical. Mallorca: Prat d’Alcúdia. 7 birds 5-VII seemingly a brood of fully grown ducklings (MUN), and 6-VII (RES). Martin

Hi Phil I've seen this bird (I presume) several times at Sa Roca over the years. Off the top of my head I can't recall if it was one or more birds but difinitely a regular. It should be listed in the annual reports. Best wishes Martin

Hi Stew I've just asked a friend who has just spent a week on the island and returned to the UK yesterday. I'll post when he responds. Martin

    Mallorca 2021

Exactly the same (I believe) as with previous releases, including in or around 2009 and before. Here's a comment I made in an earlier post about this species: On 29 May 2006 a female with 5 ducklings were observed in s'Albufera. At about the same time there are observations of 6 adults in the...

    Mallorca 2021

Hi Phil We once had Blue Tits visiting olive trees in the garden next to a holiday villa that we had hired many years ago on the outskirts of Pollensa. They were extracting moth larvae fom the terminal shoots of Olive trees, much as they do in the UK with other tree species. I've always reckoned...

Years ago I seem to recall reading somewhere that the cattle on Menorca are kept indoors, which is perhaps why you didn't see many. Perhaps it's a myth? I don't recall seeing any on my one brief trip there.

I thought it was now Great White Heron, now that it has been placed in Ardea rather than Egretta? Martin

Hi There are a couple around your price bracket that I've seen and was quite impressed. Search for Vortex Viper or Diamondback, or the Hawke Endurance. Check out the various models and magnifications and also straight versus angled. As mentioned, many people like a zoom lens but you do have to...

What a little stunner! I'll have to make do with my first Swallow of the year on Wimbledon Common this morning, after clearing the windscreen of frost. Martin

Shame abot the Courser. That view is gorgeous, looking really lush and verdant. There should be lots of insects about. Martin

    Mallorca 2021

Hi Mike It was always said that they were 'only' up in the mountains, but we hired a villa near Pollenca one year and had Blue Tits regularly in the 'garden' - digging larvae out of the terminal shoots of almonds, etc. Martin

    Mallorca 2021

Strange as it may seem, one was reported from my local patch during lockdown. Last record (that I'm aware of) was in 2006! Pleased to hear Blackcap singing in my back garden this morning on a chilly but sunny day, one of an over-wintering pair. Martin

Hi Mike The name derives from the time of the Moors when it was known as “al-buhayra” (lagoon or small sea). Martin

Yes, it had yellow legs so was the American species. It's also a bit like watching old episodes of the Sweeney and knowing London fairly well - the strange routes they used to take! In this episode they're seen a lady off the pier in Puerto Pollensa and the next second catching her in Pollensa...

I read somewhere that a swallow had been seen. Yes, Avocets can be really agressive. Watched something similar at Minsmere many years ago while doing an Acorn Camp for the National Trust on Dunwich Heath.
