Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Spent 7/days around Tarifa this year (3 & 4) with walks to Trafico and when breezy down on some rocks in the lowerr valley at La Dovellas. Whether it was the combination of both Westerly, Levanter and still days it produced the lowest numbers of passage raptors, for me, in 5 years of viewing...

I look forward to bumping into you, this year, Eddie! And anybody else that is about. I do tend to stick around the areas i mentioned as there is lots of scrub etc to look for birds and a creek that runs back into Tarifa that has some drinking-type pools. I am surprised at the sparce postings...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

I am arriving at Tarifa on Wednesday lunchtime and look forward to bumping into anybody either down on the coastal boardwalks or around Tarifa. I am on foot so will tend to stick around the unopened migration centre and the lookouts on the adjacent hills. I might manage to get to some of the...

I'll certainly keep an eye out for that 'bust' stop John;) Am trawling for cheapo fares 2/3 week or 3/4 of Sep for 5 days @ Tarifa, 3 @Cadiz (never visited, just passed thru on a coach) and a return to Tarifa for 5 days finishing with a night in old Malaga. Looking forward to a 2nd consecutive...

There's some shots of that Harris Hawk chasing Spotless Starlings - the jesses are very long and could end up entangling a roosting bird. Laurie:t:

I put in a final 3+ hours ystda morning from a small hill adjacent to the castille walls @ Tarifa and had an estimated 600+ Booted Eagles, a couple of dozen Short-Toeds, a couple of Red Kites in with a small party of Blacks , half a dozen Honey Buzzards and about 20 Griffons. Wheatears, Yellow...

Stayed around the port today but had some excellent, close, views of stuff from a small 'hill' outside somebodys house - they even bought me out a cup of coffee 'con leche'..... 1130 - 1430 produced ca 75 Booted, probably twice that of STE, a couple of Black Kites, Honey Buzzards just about...

I remember watching a documentary yonks ago about Goldies in Colorado where the utility company was re-spacing the wires (at huge cost) in order to stop the wings 'shorting' the birds and frying them. Just needs the wind-farms to highlight the edges of the blades like on aircraft or something...

Birdwatching in Straits of Gibraltar & La Janda

Interesting reading - I, personally, will stick with the little observation shelter rather than the higher and crowded facitilies elsewhere. I would rather have fewer and closer birds than distant silhouettes or specks but we are all different in our requirements;) I'm told that the migration...

That's interesting, Alf, Algaborro is 'over the hill' so to speak and thus out of sight from Tarifa..........I can assure you there was nothing like that today in the Tarifa area. The skies were clear, Blue and uncluttered by large birds, Oh i wish it was otherwise........;) Laurie:t:

Mate - there's a lot of accommodation in Tarifa, to suit all budgets. I arrived ystda, paying about 30 quid a nite. Tarifa is nice and relaxing imo, there's all the surfies and kiters:C but hey i was young once;) Birdwise it's very, very, very quiet! I was out on Los Lances this morning and...

Rather unkindly it's an 'unkindness'! - I must admit i've have never found this Victorian throwback aspect to birding/birds of much use. Anthropromorphism at its' worst but that's just me;) Leave some stuff for us non-residents Eddy..... Laurie:t:
