Indeed, if you have a pair of Dialyts like mine the serial numbering system is completely different, I think you'd have to phone Zeiss themselves to date the bins. Any pics of them at all Nessus? Still very pleased with mine, as I say pretty close to my phase-coated Pentax DCF-HS 8x36s - and... -

Thought I'd give you an update and some 'after' pictures, now that the correct-sized eyecups have finally arrived from Zeiss! Though not perfect the Dialyts look a lot better for a bit of a clean and some new eyecups! I've also actually managed to fix the focussing mechanism without taking... -

I have to admit that despite the 'official' date being 1970 I do have my doubts, especially after the comments in here about other people's Dialyts and their experience of serial numbers. Perhaps the Zeiss West serial numbers were non-sequential, though it doesn't make sense for them to do it... -

Phoned Zeiss yesterday, and I've ordered some replacement eyecups. Just realised though I forgot to ask them about the age of my Dialyts - I'm sure they could've told me exactly when they were manufactured! I got my Pentax DCF HS bins today! Done a quick comparison with the Dialyts, and... -

Thanks, look forward to getting them! Also on bit of an impulse got a pair of 'Visionary Wetland' waterproof bins for the car for £35 Inc post. Zeiss look much improved, and a stunning view out of them too, seeing birds with a new level of clarity! -

Now given the Dialyts a going over with some WD-40, they look much much better now! The focussing seems to be working better now too, I've found that putting a bit more pressure on the wheel whilst focussing improves matters, and it stops at both ends of the focussing spectrum whilst doing... -

I a bit earlier gave them a good going over with some shoe/leather cleaning paste which has bought the leather up nicely, wiped the surface dust/grime beforehand. Will do some 'after' pictures later if anyone's interested :) I haven't applied any WD-40 yet but will do later, though everything... -

Looking at those pictures it seems I have the 'long' variant of the Dialyt, so these must be a very early version, so maybe mid '60s? A few pics of the Dialyts in their current condition, including that lens with the separating: -

Hooray, they've just arrived! Lenses were dirty so gave them a clean, coatings intact though it looks like one of the objective lenses is separating a bit. Rest of the bins are filthy - but a good clean with some shoe polish as suggested by James Bean should bring them right up! First... -

Rather frustratingly no, not yet! Am hopeful they'll arrive tomorrow. Will let you know when they do, I might do a little review and/or pics if anyone's interested in a review of 39 year old bins? Can't wait to get them... When they eventually arrive! :p -

That's what I thought - haven't received the Dialyts yet but from what questions the seller answered the optics are clear which was my main concern, bit of time with a damp cloth will be worth it. The eye broken rubber eyepieces aren't a problem either - in fact could be an advantage as I wear... -

Thanks dalat, I had a feeling this was an early model! It's a leather covered one too, no rubber armouring which I also believe came later in the production run after doing some googling! Have i paid about right (£115) for these by the way? -

Just realised that there's both Porro and roof versions of this - mine's the roof version! Paid £115 Inc post on eBay, good price or not? They need new eyecups and an external clean but otherwise good according to the description and sellers replies to questions. -

I've just bought a secondhand pair of Zeiss Dialyt 8x30b binoculars off Ebay - can't wait to recieve them and take them to our local sanctuary and try them out! I'm after a bit of info on them though, specifically the if I can roughly date the bins on the serial number, like the Carl Zeiss Jena...
