Maico, I believe Nikon has used compound aspherics in binoculars in the past and I wouldn't be surprised if it explained what I saw in the first incarnation of the M7. I'm not sure what they have now would be classed as as a field flattener by everyone, but the current one appears to still have...

Bob, The M7 x42s at the launch event I found visually quite disturbing. There was a ring of both magnification distortion and afocal blur outside a rather modest sweetspot. Beyond that there appeared to be another relatively sharp zone in a similar focal plane to the centre and then an abrupt...

I'm sorry, but I haven't look back to see what binoculars you've owned and tried and what you see as your priorities. If it's light weight and a wide, flat field of view then I'd be inclined to keep my fingers crossed that Nikon have realised they didn't get it quite right and have been getting...

I have no idea what the changes might be but spent some time with the HG at the UK Birdfair last August, and while there was much to like, I just didn't feel it offered a £800 view. To me the colour rendition seemed a little anaemic, lacked a little contrast and the CA too high. Not sure they...

RT, Congratulations on the purchase and many thanks for the well considered comparison. They are pretty much in line with my impressions when I tried them at BirdFair. Did you note the relative CA performance? David

Henry, The press anouncement for N-FK58 looks like May 2014 and the SF was launched August 2014, so it sounds plausible. The spec sheet I found states a Vd of 90.9. I've not had an opportunity to take a boosted look at the longitudinal CA of the SF but I thought the Vanguard really very good...

Henry, Vanguard use Hoya FCD100 glass in the Endeavour EDII with an Abbe value (Vd) of 95. I tried explaining it to the European sales and marketing guy and he reckoned the average Jo wouldn't be interested. David

Isn't the AFOV the actual angle the view makes with the eye? In simplistic terms, easily calculated from the eye relief and the functional width of the eyepiece lens. Gets around that messy distortions, and tells us how much of our field of view is used. Of course measuring those with total...
