5 different bill patterns in 5 different 3cy michahellis - this shows some of the variation - now, at the beginning of their 3rd calendar year on average bills begin to change from black to pale and in spring they get yellow with a dark subterminal mark, sometimes (in may-june) even without any dark mark. the one with the "glaucous-like" bill even shows orange-rosy bill base at the moment.

the last (small female) still seems to have rel. dark irises. it is not as advanced as the other 3cy in covert and tertial moult either.

nice and varying pattern in the 2nd gen. coverts here: http://www.birdforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=237553&d=1263218590

thanks for sharing! anymore pics with pontics, cris? those yelling on the ice look promising ;)

Sorry Lou, no more pics with Caspian Gulls. As a matter of fact, I saw just a few cachinnans, but I have to say that I was able to ID only about a half of the large gulls population (around 40 birds), because as you already know, I don't have a scope. This area with ice is relative large, so I was able to check only some parts of it...
For the moment, the weather is relative warm here in Bucharest, so not a very good season for gulls...

Any comments about this bird?

yepp, a wonderfull 2nd winter (3cy) caspian gull - one of the plumages i like most... (12.01. - is it tineretului park?); note that white tongues on underside p10 are much longer than in the average 2nd winter michahellis

Thank you for your input, Lou. Pics from post #1204 are taken on January 12th in Herastrau. I also have some pics with two 2cy birds (michahellis). One of them could be seen in the 5th pic from post #1204

Here are some pics with the 2cy bird (michahellis).
I called it "The Scavenger".

that 2cy michahellis by far isn't typical, cristian. a YLG usually has an all dark bill in 1st winter, this bill is rel. long, inner GC pattern is rel. filigrane (outer GC are plain which is ok), tail band is rel. broad and there are many thin transversal bands towards the base, but dissimilar to most caspians'.

Here is the second 2cy bird. This one looks like a rather typical YLG (I would say...).

today's review tells it is a caspian.

i'd have expected a smiley, cristian. it's our old friend. :t:
actually you discovered him (or i discovered him in your photos) on 28.09.2009: at that time he didn't have this left p10 with the extreme pattern - on right wing there's the oval mirror like in the winter pics but left wing looks "normal" for a 2cy YLG lacking any mirror. so, peter's theory about a renewed left p10 seems to be proven.
note how it changed iris and bill colour during these 3,5 month.

Yes, it's our old friend indeed and I spotted him/her in the same location. Unfortunately, this time, I didn't manage to take some really good pics (I took 3 or 4 but the one from the post above is the best one...).

I don't think that i have more pics with it. Here is another(?) 2cy bird taken there.

that's a 3cy, probably a michahellis with predominately pale underwings and a marinus-head ;) i think i can see a shadow of a mirror in both p10...
