john as probably one of the few that have tried both lenses and used the sport in the field ,my appraisal last sunday of the C was that with the focus range set from 10mtrs to infinity which is the fastest focussing range there was absolutely nothing between them ,its lightning fast .Peter,
Just a thought came to mind. Can you please comment, when you were testing both the Sport and Contemorary leneses at The Photography Show, the AF responses and speeds between them. Thanks!
Cheers,
John
You can also set this up on any of the modern Camera's Jeff where you can change the 1st and 2nd image priority in AI servo mode between 'speed' 'focus' or in between the two. (in one shot mode you just have 'AF release priority').not sure on the C but certainly on the sport you can set the focus speed up for faster but less accuraccy yourself via the usb dock ,i have yet to play with that side of it
Thanks Peter - this little light weight walk about is something I could be interested in. I had a Tamron 150-600 which was very good IQ for the money but the AF was questionable at times - hoping the 'C' will turn out better in that department.Went to the Photography Show and tried both the Sport and Contemporary versions of the Sigma lens. Light is so poor there that it is impossible to correctly judge each lens on optical performance. The MTF charts however on the Sigma site indicate that they are very similar and I would concur with this based on my shots taken at high ISO and slow shutter speed. Build quality of the Contemporary seemed very good and its lighter weight made it much easier to handhold. The light in the NEC is very poor so it was a miracle I managed to get any shots at all showing how effective the Optical Stabilisation is. Focusing speed of the Contemporary was good with little hunting in such low light conditions but not as fast as the Canon 100-400 mkiii. All in all I can see that Sigma definitely has a winner here especially at £899 which is the pre-order price advertised at Wex and Park Cameras.
I have loaded the pictures of both lenses onto my Flickr site so you can have a look but please do not be to harsh on me as they were not intended for a side by side comparison of sharpness etc because as previously stated they were taken in less than ideal conditions with camera shake being a real issue.
Because of the indoor lighting I have had to correct colour cast and exposure but have not applied sharpening to any.

Yep I know that Roy ,but this is another setting built into the lens itself ,just not sure if it's applicable to the C model and it's for all shots in that burst .You can also set this up on any of the modern Camera's Jeff where you can change the 1st and 2nd image priority in AI servo mode between 'speed' 'focus' or in between the two. IMHO these settings are one of the main reason's why some folk are reporting AF issues with the 7D2 - they have the setting at 'speed' instead of 'Focus'.
Yes I realise it is built into the Lenses settings via the dock but I wonder what would happen if you had, say, 'accuracy' set for the lens and 'speed' set on the Camera (or visa versa). Would one take priority or would they cancel each other out :eek!:Yep I know that Roy ,but this is another setting built into the lens itself ,just not sure if it's applicable to the C model and it's for all shots in that burst .
yes that was at the back of my mind to roy ,time will tell ,while mines performing o.k i'll leave well alone .Yes I realise it is built into the Lenses settings via the dock but I wonder what would happen if you had, say, 'accuracy' set for the lens and 'speed' set on the Camera (or visa versa). don't think so roy ,as i told him on there i tried one on my 70d at the show and there was no problem at all ,and the fact that the lens worked perfectly on his 100d to points to a problem with the camera not the lens .I have seen examples from a few guys who have this lens on other sites - all looked pretty poor to me but I am fairly sure it was more to do with the photographer rather than the lens.
One of the guys has returned his lens as there was problems with close focusing with the 70D (but well within the MFD limits). Apparently the lens was fine on his other Camera and other lenses were OK on his 70D. He took it back to the shop and they tried another copy of the lens but with the same result - maybe it is a firmware issue ?
You could be right, I did find it strange that it worked OK on the lower spec Camera (100D).don't think so roy ,as i told him on there i tried one on my 70d at the show and there was no problem at all ,and the fact that the lens worked perfectly on his 100d to points to a problem with the camera not the lens .
That's exactly what I will do, MFA and then go out to use it, is that a problem?
