New Panasonic G80 or 85 ? (1 Viewer)

Some early results with the G85/PL100-400. These are both from the OOC jpgs, most of which look fantastic. They are virtually untouched, except for crop/resize and finishing.

I could easily have placed them in the PL100-400 thread, but thought this more appropriate. I cannot remember the GH2/100-300 combo ever delivering results looking equally sharp when enlarging OOC jpgs.

Comments re focusing: SAF similar to what I have been used to, sometimes the background is very attractive to the AF, but easy to redo. Fast!

In flight definitely better than with the GH2, but still with lots of misses due to attraction to background. I need more days out to see if something can be done to improve keeper rate.

Nice start, pleased your happy so far,the focus motor in the lens is very fast compered to the 100-300 mk1

Thanks Mike. I am not done with looking through the many photos, but me relying on around 1/400 for flight photos was not correct. I will need to go faster (as you also alluded to early on). I think I will try to set IS for the panning mode in my birds in flight settings to see if that makes a difference.

Still using the little time I have for older photos. Here is a series of a heron catching a snake. The first three are all within the same second (one more slightly out of focus). I used medium burst speed. Image 4 is 3 seconds later, and the last is a couple of minutes later.

I used AFS for this series so only first image of every group was fresh focus. One reason so show them here is to comment on the low vs medium burst rate: I think this series shows that I want to stay with medium and live with having to get more external hard drives :-O

I will likely also upload a couple of these to my gallery here

Well i have deserted this format,i have nothing bad to say about it and even nothing bad about Panasonic but.

I took my 100-400 in on the 23rd of may Panasonic very quickly said it needed replacing, still no lens, i know this can happen to any manufacturer but if i wasn't using m4/3 my local dealer would have had something long to lend me out of his S/H stock.

I got full new value back for my lens and a great deal on the rest of my gear so i bought the Nikon D500 and the new Sigma 100-400.

That's why ime missing and my opinion on the usability of m4/3 is still high, this lack of local back up of loan gear is the only reason i moved on.

Sorry to hear you are not available to exchange ideas anymore. I do wish you well with your new setup!

Surprised to read you're back to being 'Nikon' Mike...I recall you advised me in my deliberations last year when choosing between DSLR and M4/3. I eventually went for D7200 / 300 PF and haven't regretted it, but in order to avoid my wife stealing it off me got her a G80 with the MkII 100-300 Pana lens. I have to say we have both been a bit underwhelmed with it in terms of IQ, focus acquisition and (surprisingly) ease of use compared with D7200. Still feel we have a way to go to get the best from the G80.

Interested to hear how you get on with the 100-400 Sigma, which obviously wasn't an option for me last year. Seems like it could tempt a lot of people away from bigger and more expensive lenses.

I have regrets about having to leave m4/3 but i lost may june last year waiting for my lens and this year waiting for a replacement, thats why i decided it had to be the D500 to ease my upset.

I did some birds today but need to re tweek the focus set up

A few from the Sigma 100-400

Impressive shots with the Sigma, you may feel you need to tweek the focus but they look pretty sharp to me!

A little real life test of the CAF today with some swifts as target. The five images I am going to attach were within the same second so I assume with one press of the shutter. They are all OOC jpgs except for cropping to 100%. No they are not perfect but given the speed of the target (I could definitely not hold the bird in the center of the frame or even within the same general area) I think they are good enough. No 2 I am quite happy with.

I guess this is as good a place for this as any: I am happy for the water-proofing of my G85/PL lens. It has been rained on several times lately and everything works perfectly. I am not sure that would have been the case with my previous setup.

Two more iso 6400 shots from the G80.
