I'll take a punt (being the man who shot scores of photos of a range of "Empids" before they all turned out to be Western Pewees) and agree that you have an Eastern Peewee there.

Long wings, weak eye-ring, why not?

Hi Guys,

Your bird looks like an Empidonax to me, with shorter wings than found on a pewee. Notice how the primary projection is much shorter than the exposed tertial length. Also notice how strong the wing bars are. With the shape of this bird, broad tail and such, weak eyering, it really has a Trail's (Willow/Alder) feel to it for me. I've attached a blow-up showing primary projection relative to tertials.

Chris

Would it help to describe the habitat? Seaside marsh - LOTS of tall grass. Also, according to Sibley, Alders only come through CT in migration (would that have started by early (REALLY early) August?) while Willows are summer residents. Keep in mind, this is southern CT, literally 1-2 hundred yards from Long Island Sound.
