Never been recorded in Beijing!! Fingers crossed.... It's turning out to be a very exciting late autumn.. who know what else will turn up? Had our first snow this weekend in Beijing.. hoping for Pallas's Sandgrouse and an owl or two...

Jinshi Golf Club Nov. 7, 2012

Had just over an hour at the Jinshi Golf Club today just before dark. I was out looking for Bullfinches that have been reported lately. None today, but might have time to try another place tomorrow. The Willow Tit below could be Marsh but I'm not sure. After looking at the OBC web site I'm leaning towards Willow. It didn't really call (other than a few notes) so voice is not really an option. Bill structure, body shape, pale fringes on the tertials and secondaries all point towards Willow for me but please correct if I'm wrong. I have very little experience with either.

I once again had to negotiate my way in after buying a ticket for 30 RMB. On one road I was stopped and told to get in a car to take me back out but negotiated my way out of that claiming I wasn't interfearing with any golfers, and then stopped again while walking back to the gate later and told to not come back.....it's a fantastic birding site but very hard to get in and stay in. The problem is that if Bullfinches are in town, this is where they'd be (in Jinshitan anyway). I do know how to get in the back way through a forest but am trying to build trust with the gate people by doing things right...... It's full of original forest and fantastic looking habitat. It is easier to get in during the winter when it's closed.

Common Pheasant - many
Great Cormorant - 2 (I didn't have time to do a sea watch but this place usually has good numbers of Pelagic in the winter and Great in the summer)
Great Spotted Woodpecker - 1
Great Tit - many
Coal Tit - 20
Willow Tit - 1 (Please check the photo and see if I'm right here, I have more pics also)
Chinese Bulbul - 3
Dusky Warbler - 1
Yellow-browed Warbler - 5
Goldcrest - 3
Eurasian Treecreeper - 1
Daurian Redstart - 1
Siberian Accentor - 1
Brambling - 10
Eurasian Siskin - 7
Long-tailed Rosefinch - 1
Meadow Bunting - 1
Yellow-throated Bunting - 40

The autumn migration report from Laotieshan is completed and can be found at http://birdingbeijing.com/
This was put together by Paul Holt. I tried to upload it here several times over the last few days but it won't go. It's not all bad though, gives you a good reason to visit Terry's wonderful blog there again. If you haven't already saved his blog in your favourites and don't visit it regularly I personally think you should be banned from this one!

Happy reading!

Sea-farming Ponds Nov. 13, 2012

A quick and cold visit that resulted in a Black Stork in the air upon arrival. This is my second and the first was only a few weeks ago. It was distant but gave nice looks for a minute or so as it tried to handle the heavy wind. Very cold today - shades of winter birding.....

I have about 30 minutes now before I run out of daylight after work so soon I'll be only getting out on weekends.

Common Pheasant
Gadwall - 6
Mallard - 20
Spot-billed Duck - 50
Tufted Duck - 2 (one with some kind of garbage stuck on its head -- see the photos)
Black Stork - 1
Grey Heron - 7
Eurasian Kestrel - 3
Peregrine Falcon - 1
Common Coot - 26 (should be heading out soon, no Little Grebes today but they could have been taking shelter from the wind)
Green Sandpiper - 1
Vinous-throated Parrotbill - 1 group
White Wagtail - 2 late leucopsis
Yellow-throated Bunting - 15
Pallas's Reed Bunting - 10
Japanese Reed Bunting - 2

Sea-farming Ponds November 27, 2012

I literally had 30 minutes to run and check the main duck pond and there was a Baer's Pochard waiting for me! This is a life bird for me and sightings have been very scarce in China as of late. The status of this species isn't headed in the right direction. There was only one today with a few other ducks and Coots in the last small area of open water - the rest are mostly frozen.

The list from this quick trip is small but I am delighted to add Baer's Pochard to my Jinshitan list!
Common Pheasant - 1
Gadwall - 1
Mallard - 3
Baer's Pochard - 1
Ferruginous Duck - 2
Tufted Duck - 2
Grey Heron - 1
Eastern Buzzard - 1
Common Coot - around 15 huddled together
Green Sandpiper - 1
Great Tit - 3
Yellow-throated Bunting - 5
Pallas's Reed Bunting - 2

I have been very busy with work lately but have seen many Varied Tit in and around my house in the last few weeks, 3 Swan Sp. flying over work last week, A Saunders's Gull among all the other gulls near the beach two weekends ago with my son, and the resident Chinese Hill Warbler that I hear and/or see in the hedge where I park at work each day.

Nothing like a self-found lifer on the patch, especially a bird of this magnitude - congratulations Tom!

Great to sees it next to a Ferruginous Duck too.

Cheers
Mike

there was a Baer's Pochard waiting for me! This is a life bird for me.

That is fabulous recompense for all the times you visit. It makes everything worthwhile, when you turn up something as great as this on one of your regular haunts; even more so, when it’s a lifer.

Those are probably some of the best 30 minutes you have ever spent.

Did you ever think you might have one of those there ?

I’m just surprised you didn’t post it in capitals and a huge font. I would have.

CONGRATULATIONS !

Jinshi Golf Club Dec. 1, 2012

Had a wonderful 3 hours this morning in this excellent winter birding area. Temperature was -6 and warmed to around zero by noon with no wind. I gained access through the gate via a friend's car without a hassle and left by a small side trail that emptys into a parking lot area where people are supposed to pay 80 RMB per person to walk the geopark trail. As I popped out of the woods, a person who works at the ticket booth saw me and wasn't sure what he was supposed to do with this foreigner appearing from the forest. He looked sternly at me, thought for a moment, and then said "don't cross!" I smiled and said "ok" and he seemed fine with that. I don't think he we aware of the Chinse Nuthatch, Rosefinches, and other winter goodies that can be found in his forest.

List:

Common Pheasant - I counted up to 50 and then probably saw 20 more.
Mallard - 5
Spot-billed Duck - 20
Common Goldeneye - 5
Red-breasted Merganser - 8
Pelagic Cormorant - 1
Black-tailed Gull - 10
Vega/Mongolian Gull - 5
Hill Pigeon - 1
Great Spotted Woodpecker - 2
Bull-headed Shrike - 1
Azure-winged Magpie - 10
Great Tit - 30
Coal Tit - 10
Chinese Hill Warbler - 8
Chinese Bulbul - 15
Vinous-throated Parrotbill - 3 groups
Goldcrest - 3
Chinese Nuthatch - 3
Naumann's Thrush - 6
Red-flanked Bluetail - 1
Daurian Redstart - 1
Siberian Accentor - 14! (two times I had 4 or more in one tree)
Long-tailed Rosefinch - 6 and heard a few more
Pallas's Rosefinch - 4 (1 male, 3 females)
Hawfinch - 2
Meadow Bunting - 5
Yellow-throated Bunting - 50

Your patch just oozes quality Tom - Pelagic Cormorant and Pallas's Rosefinch, plus a cracking Bull-headed Shrike and Siberian Accentor all say that winter has arrived in style!

Great stuff!
