I purchased my G1 in the spring of 09 and never have been happy with the Kit lens. I was excited when the new 20mm f/1.2 was released but the first reviews mad me hesitant to purchase. Neil Fifer visited me last month and we shot several days together. Our conclusions are: the Nikon 8400 is probable the best Digiscoping camera ever made. It has its deficits but overall it is wonderful. The G1 body cannot be beat but both lenses are inadequate for Digiscoping. The glass is not ED in either lens and our guess is that the lenses have molded aspheric polymer components. The Kit lens and the 20mm lens worked well under 30 meters but were not good on distance shots. So for me; auto focus is not important and sharpness is omnipotent. I purchased a Borg adapter for the Micro 4/3 and an M-42 T-ring adapter. I had a Pentax 40mm f/2.8 pancake and a Kowa TSN-PZ photo adapter. I purchased off of eBay a SMC Pentax 50mm f/1.2 manual lens and a SMC Pentax-M 28mm F/2.8 lens. Now I am happy and satisfied with the G1. With the Lens and eyepiece combinations I have the sharpness and a range equivalence of 1120mm to 6000mm
Apparently the G1 is to be discontinued according to the Panasonic Japanese website. http://ctlg.panasonic.jp/product/info.do?pg=04&hb=DMC-G1 Get one while you can.
Cheers Gary
Here is the setup for the G1 on the Swarovski scope using the Swarovski DCA adapter.

Hi Roy
I have received my G1 and use the Kit Lens with an old Kowa TSN-4 with x20-60/TSN-DA1A , initially quite impressed (considering it was pouring with rain and shot through a bedroom window).
I had Pentax M 50/1.7 with a K1000 and had good results on the Kowa but our local Panasonic dealer tells me that there are no micro 4/3 adapters available for K mount lenses.
Can you explain the spec's part numbers for Borg adapter an M-42 T-ring adapter please?
Many thanks
Tony
Hi Neil,
What eyepiece is on the scope in the pictures you posted?
Thanks!
A few more shots under low light condition.
ISO 640 and 800 were used.
STS80HD + 30X eye piece + G1 + 14-45mm kit lens.
Great stuff - definately need to hear more about this - Thinking / saving to get into this - would like to use my Canons G7 and G10 on a Kowa TSN-882. CAN YOU SUPPLY SOME INFO........??? please contact me if you find time- <[email protected]> THANKS !!!As it is my birthday soon I was able to get hold of the much anticipated Lumix G1 yesterday for the grand price of US770 with the kit lens and an 8 gig card. I went out this morning very early without having a chance to read the manual so will update with all the features later.
The good news for digiscoping is that the kit zoom (14 - 45 ) lens is internally focusing and has a 52 mm thread. My DCA adapter screwed straight in and as the camera/lens combo is light I was able to use it unsupported. Vignetting was only slight on the Swarovski 30x eyepiece ( 20 mm of ER ) and disappeared with one zoom click at 18 mm (42 mm in the old money or 1260 mm ) . Auto focus seemed to work well using the Electronic Viewfinder as well as the LCD screen as you would expect. I took this image at iso 400 as light levels were low when I started but there is still no apparent noise. I took photos down to iso 100 and all steps in-between, but I didn't try higher today. The shrike was at iso 160, flycatcher at iso 400 and the wagtail at iso 100 .
A nice feature is that when you move your eye up to the viewfinder the lcd screen cuts off automatically.
I shot some RAW images as well but haven't processed them yet. The camera does slow down when shooting RAW but you can get a short series of shots first before it needs to process which takes some time.
I got the maroon colored one which makes a change from boring black.
I was interested in the Olympus 50/2.0 Macro lens for this but no-one had stock and they didn't have the adapter either but I'm quite impressed with the kit zoom.
The old 8400 has a worthy successor.

3) The G1 works with the SMC XW14 eyepiece because the latter has a huge diameter, approximately the same size as the G1 lens. The G1 would probably NOT work on scopes with much smaller diameter eyepieces, e.g. Nikon Fieldscopes. ...I am really interested in the new lumix G2 because of its HD video capabilities and swivel touch screen.
I use a Nikon RAIII Spotting Scope and am thinking of getting the 30x Wide Eye Piece which has a 19,8 mm Eye Relief in order to use the kit zoom lens of the G2.
Since it seems that the diameter of the eyepiece influences the amount of vingetting could someone tell me if the 30x Wide Eyepiece for the Nikon Scope could work? The exit diameter of the 16-48 Zoom eyepiece the Scope comes with is about 1,6 cm (e.g. 0,63 inches) and the total diameter of the eyepiece is 4,5 cm (1,7 inches), but i do not know if the 30x wide eyepiece has a larger or smaller exit diameter or total diameter.
Hi everyone,
Is it possible for someone to post an image (or point me in the direction of one) illustrating the amount of vignetting with the G1 kit lens and a Swarovski 20-60x eyepiece? How does the vignetting change when zooming from 14mm to 45mm with the kit lens?
Many thanks,
Mark
