Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area? (1 Viewer)

Hi

I'm thinking about visiting Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area, near Marion, Ohio, sometime in early January. I'm trying for Northern Saw-whet and Short-eared Owls, plus "field" birds like Lapland Longspur and Snow Bunting. Does anyone have any experience with Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area? I've done some online searches but they have been futile.

Any help appreciated,
Neil

Hi Neil,

When I lived in Ohio, I made many visits to Killdeer Plains.

The traditional area for Saw-whet and Long-eareds is the pine grove south of county road 71 near where the road makes a curve to the left (if you're heading west) near the western boundary of the wildlife area. See map: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/pdf/pub23.pdf

Short-eared Owls could be found near the Sportsman Center on county road 75 and also along county road 115.

Washburn road was the place for Lapland and Snow Buntings.

I haven't been for a few years, so maybe things have changed, but hope this helps you out.

Check http://www.ohiobirds.org for recent reports.
