thanks abo ali, i do see you point the small withe rim on the wing clearly indicate a garden warbler, thanks all once again.

Am I the only person looking at this bird and wondering why it isn't a Barred Warbler?

It looks very stocky; is heavy-billed (surely too heavy for Garden?); and has cold grey plumage tones with a dark lores. The only feature I'm not happy with is the lack of barring, especially on the undertail coverts (this feature is quite variable though). If it were not for this I would have no problem easily dismissing this as a BW.

It's eye in pic 2 also looks bi-coloured which fits Barred.

Any pics of the bird's upperparts?

Steve

Garden warbler for me as I'm not sure that a barred warbler would ever look that clean on the underparts (especially on the utc)? Structure looks better for garden warbler as well, e.g. I always think that barred warbler have proportionally longer tails.

Having said that, it does look a bit odd and the bill does look a bit heavy, especially in the first phtoto...

I agree it is probably a Garden for all of the reasons you've given, but I'd still like to see some pics of the bird's upperparts just to set my mind at rest.

I must say I can't see anything odd for a Garden Warbler. Garden Warblers do have quite stocky bills with broad bases, and the head pattern with a strong eye ring and dark lores fits in my opinion better Garden Warbler (compare with this) than Barred Warbler, which has a plainer head pattern. Like mentioned, the UTCs are completely unpatterned, the outer tail feathers lack white tips and the tail looks short. Also the rather brownish plumage looks spot on for Garden Warbler to me.

thanks friend for all this sorry could not check it before.

yes i do have a male Barred but it is a bit bigger than this one, the terrrrr sound that comes from this one is somehow similar to Barred's.

attached is two shots from today and a shot for the male BW on the same branch and a shot for a warbler i posted here last month and was told it is a GW.

1,2 and 4 are Garden Warbler. I think it was just the angle of view and lighting before that made me think of Barred.

As you said, 3 is a Barred. Nice pictures!
